Today we're launching a Pandemic Mini-Issue! First up: "Measuring the Black Death" by Saloni Dattani. In 1346, the Black Death spread through Europe, killing 30-60% of its population. But what accounts for this wide range of estimates? Where did these numbers actually come from? And how can we count deaths more accurately in the future? We learned a ton while editing this piece, and we hope you'll enjoy reading it! ?? What I am sharing with my 16 year son today: ?? 1?? This is a call to action. We're getting more involved in our community. 2?? People are going to look out for each other. Movements will get stronger. 3?? Feel your feelings. Take time to process. Give yourself time. The feelings mean we care. 4?? And ultimately, it's a time to be spiritually, mentally, and emotionally strong. 5?? For how extreme and scary it is right now, good things will come from this. People cannot be complacent with Trump in office. 6?? The 2-party system is really broken. Switzerland has a federal council of 7 presidents. Sadly, in the U.S., the pendulum always swings between progressive and conservative politics. American just couldn't stand that we had a Black president, so Trump came after Obama. We have to hold the vision for what is next and work to create it. 7?? And today, feel your feelings because it's a sad, scary, freaking day when ignorance wins. But this is a marathon, not a sprint. Trump winning is shocking, but sadly not surprising given this country's racism and misogyny. 8?? Ultimately, truth always wins. We have to stay connected to the big picture and work to make it happen. No one can take our hope!!

15 signs Trump is going to win barring a black swan event: (The last one's a killer) 1. LA Times refused to endorse a candidate first time in 20 years. 2. WAPO (Bezos) refusing to endorse Kamala. Trump’s ONE interview with Rogan got more views than all of Kamala’s interviews did COMBINED. 5. Mainstream media stopped talking policies instead using fear porn to win. (Nazi + Hilter) 6. Republicans are leading early voting which rarely happens. 7. Tech CEO’s are calling Trump, not Harris. (Tim Cook) 8. European stocks have dropped 7% since late September due to fear of Trump’s Tariffs. 9. Democrats are losing both the Jewish and the Muslim vote. WOW!!!!! 10. Recently, community-engaged efforts to improve Black maternal health disparities have moved towards cross-sector approaches that center the lived experiences of Black birthing people. Despite these comprehensive approaches, community members rarely participate throughout the research lifecycle. Citizen science-led projects like those described in this paper by Drs. Catov, Miller, and Krishnamurti are one way to acknowledge and commit to bidirectional community-partnered research and action https://lnkd.in/eJY2xbEz

For centuries, the medical system has justified the neglect and mistreatment of Black patients with harmful, racist myths—one of the most insidious being that we have a higher pain tolerance. These falsehoods are not just ignorant—they are deadly. These falsehoods have led to Black patients being dismissed, undertreated, and left to suffer at the hands of physicians who choose to adhere to baseless, racist rhetoric rather than medical science. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, has publicly claimed that Black people should not receive the same vaccine schedules as white people because he believes our immune systems are inherently stronger.?This is not just misinformation—it is a direct threat to Black lives. Beliefs and morals shape leaders, leadership shapes policy, and policy determines who lives and who dies. If RFK Jr. is confirmed, Black communities will suffer.?Maternal mortality rates—already disproportionately high—will worsen. Access to vaccines during the next public health crisis will be compromised. The leading cause of death in this country, heart disease, will continue to devastate Black lives at even greater rates. This is not a matter of political preference. It is a matter of life and death. Black Americans deserve leaders who respect science, value Black lives, and take our health seriously. Anything less is a threat to our survival. Thank you, Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, for boldly questioning RFK Jr. and exposing his flawed, dangerous belief that will threaten the health and lives of millions of Black Americans. *The views expressed are my own and do not reflect those of my employer or any other entity.* #HHS #RFK #PublicHealth #BlackHealthMatters #HealthPolicy #Health
