Dear connections. It brings me an immense joy to inform you all that I got the opportunity to share my insights about the book "Time and meaning: Indian rock art from early to modern times" The book enlightens us with an archaic art form which stood the test of time and still holds the ability to travel us back in time and connect us with our culture, with our roots. States like MP which has a rich presence of this art form; the currency of ancient times at its heart it has Bhopal whose epicentre Bhopal hills umbrellas a couple of sites like the famous jain temple, Idgah hills, guff mandir. The fact that the surrounding rock cliff areas of Manua Bhan Ki Tekri situated at Lalghati had mesolithic and monolithic paintings only extends the fact that the descriptive and adaptive ability of art form to evolve with time in lieu with the avenues available at those times. These paintings only enhance nature's beauty but also give purpose to it; i.e storytelling. For example bhimlat has some unidentified red drawings, bhimlat where two tigers accompanied by a cub chasing a group of stag and blackbuck with a human raising his stick above the tigers. Bhimlat showing us humans interact with animals and the most descriptive being bhimlat with red and whitish dots covering the entire panel showing mesolithic animals which are superimposed with smaller but vivid images of riders and archers. With paintings the use of particular colors has its role for locals like Gonds and Korku. Red is a symbol of power and white is a symbol for life. Such beliefs hold the importance of paint and color which are the key ornaments of the art form. These natives also pay homage to Togo's of castle, household and fields and also worshiping animal deities of tiger and serpent. Each place has its culture and has its own rituals like in Chhattisgarh hatha paints are seen outside the walls just the day after Diwali. Patteda Anchu" refers to a beautiful handwoven cotton saree that originates from the Gajendragarh region of Karnataka, India. Its name directly translates to "striped border," which perfectly describes its defining feature – a broad designed border that runs along the entire length of the fabric. The name Patteda Anchu, however, goes beyond its literal translation and delves into its rich history and cultural significance Historical Origin: Some sources claim that this weave has a 250-year-old origin, where an artisan first weaved it as a gift for his daughter. Others trace its roots back to the 10th century, where it was offered to temple dancers and the local deity, Goddess Yellamma Saundatti. Cultural Significance: This weave transcends religious boundaries and has been adopted by both Lingayat and other communities within Karnataka. Traditionally, the sari was first offered to the goddess Yellamma before being gifted to a bride, symbolizing blessings and prosperity for her new life. Its association with temple dancers also adds a layer of artistic and cultural heritage. Design and Wearability: The main characteristic is the "Anchchu," meaning border, which is typically thick and features unique patterns. Interesting fact: the entire saree is reversible, allowing for two distinct looks! It comes in various designs, including plain, checked, striped, and with natural dyes. Today, it's worn by women for various occasions, showcasing its versatility and enduring appeal. The Toda people have lived in the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu for centuries. It is here that Toda embroidery emerged as a distinct cultural practice. ?? This beautiful embroidery work on shawls worn by both genders is called ‘puthkuli’. The red-and-black embroidery work is executed on a white fabric base depicting a variety of motifs inspired from their former pastoral lifestyle and the surrounding environment. The puthkulis are still worn by the Todas on important rites of passage, festivals or community events, and are highly valued. Nowadays most Toda families, being landowners, have taken to agriculture and maintain large plantations growing a variety of different crops. Due to being financially well-off, few Todas are motivated to take up embroidery work as a full-time business. Initiatives have been made by NGOs to ‘train’ and ‘help’ the Todas in commercialising their craft—the women are introduced to new designs, and embroidery work is done on a new range of products which has no relevance to Toda culture. Cooperative societies are set up which attempt to mass produce the embroidery work to cater to the tourism market. The Todas feel that new motifs taught by NGOs are not authentic and that the copying of their motifs has resulted in a loss of exclusivity of their craft. To protect their intellectual property, the embroidery work was listed as a geographically tagged product and is protected under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act (GI Act) 1999 of the Government of India. I visited #Bhuvaneshwar last month which inspired me to write about #Geographic_Indications (GI). It is a fascinating form of?#intellectual_property. A product bearing ‘GI Tag’ is famous or known due to its place of origin. Such place is distinct for its natural conditions such as climate, traditions, location which make such product peculiar to a specific geographic region.?#GI?can be obtained for anything, be it an art, craft, food, etc. Interesting right? In this photo, I am sitting next to an intricate artform?#pattachitrapainting!?#odisha_pattachitra?has received GI tagging. It is associated with a heritage village?#raghurajpur?. It demonstrates traditional knowledge of the villagers to illustrate folklores on a piece of cloth in a form of painting. The colours used for these paintings are made from natural products such as shells, stones, plants and other natural ingredients. These paintings are mainly inspired by stories of lord?#jagannath. The meticulous thought process and delicate craftmanship makes it unique and (priceless). While strolling around the village one can definitely sense ‘originality’ of this Art (even without any tag) but to commercialise it in outside market, GI tagging is a boon to fetch true value for these artifacts. "Stitch, Fold, Repeat: Mastering the Basics!" On October 2nd, we took a fun and practical spin on Gandhi Jayanti by teaching our Jodhpur House boys some essential Grooming & Self-Care Skills—because, let’s be honest, it's not just about looking good; it's about mastering the basics that everyone should know! First up, button stitching. Who knew watching boys try to sew a button could be this entertaining? After a few "thread-through-the-needle" struggles and some “Oh no, I stitched my shirt to the table” moments, they got the hang of it. Next was ironing, where we emphasized the importance of crisp lines (and avoiding burns!). Watching the enthusiasm, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them try ironing their socks next. Finally, the wardrobe organization—turns out, folding a shirt is a lot like folding a parachute: one wrong fold and it’s chaos. The boys loved it! Seeing their excitement to organize their clothes (who knew?!) was proof that these life skills aren’t just helpful, but actually fun. We also took a moment to highlight the incredible work of our fourth-grade workers who do this day in and day out—respect for them increased tenfold! The tradition of handloom weaving in India is ancient. It holds immense cultural significance as it embodies the heritage, traditions, and artistic expressions of diverse communities. Handloom sector is a symbol of the country's glorious cultural heritage and an important source of livelihood in the country. National Handloom Day is celebrated to recognize the importance of the Handloom Sector in India, promote indigenous crafts, and empower weavers by providing them with support and recognition. This Day seeks to honour the handloom weavers and provide motivation and sense of pride to the handloom industry, by appreciating their contribution to the cultural, traditional and economic landscape of the country. India's handloom artists are globally known for their unique hand spinning, weaving and printing style. They are based out of small towns and villages of the country which transfer skills from one generation to the next. The industry is a significant source of employment, especially in rural and semi-rural areas. The sector is key to women empowerment as over 70% of handloom weavers and allied workers are women. Preserving these traditions helps maintain the cultural identity of various communities and ensures the continuity of their heritage. Different regions of the country are renowned for their unique textures and weaving techniques. But even so they take inspiration from each other once in a while. This saree is an embodiment of the skilful craft of Telangana with a soulful sprinkle of inspiration coming from Tamil Nadu. It is a beautiful and comfortable Narayanpet handloom saree made in Mubbagam style with the centre part housing Rudraksh motifs, a classic style woven in Kancheepuram. Narayanpet handloom sarees are relatively lighter in weight and they can be worn by women comfortably all through the year. A perfect “Mubbagam” is created when a saree’s width is divided into three equal parts, with the upper and lower parts forming the contrast border. It is said that Mubbagam sarees were popular with Devadasis or the temple dancers, as their draped sarees stood out with three equal width parts in different colours and the audience could admire their attire even from a distance.
