It was an honor to serve on the Inasmuch Community Fellowship Retreat’s panel today. The discussion was led by one of my favorite people on this planet, Sarah Roberts, and I was joined by three other leaders who I admire—Commissioner Allie Friesen, Mayor David Holt, and Andre' Caldwell. During the hour, we discussed our leadership philosophies, experiences with failure, and the motivations that drive us. It was humbling to sit among these community heroes—each of them has so much wisdom to share. A few key takeaways/common themes shared by this crew: ??Failure is important. You don’t have to rely solely on your own failures to learn and gain experience—learn from other people’s failures as well—through books, conversations, observations, etc. ??You don’t have to have it all figured out. ??Choose not to care too much about what other people think about you, but ALSO don’t confuse this sentiment with permission to be a jerk. ??Lean into opportunities that interest you—even if they don’t fall on the traditional “path to success.” ??Be gracious and generous with what you’ve been given—to whom much is given, much is expected. ??When you fail at something or can’t seem to get it right at the first “swing,” it’s not that you can’t do it. Reframe the way you’re thinking. Instead of “I can’t” sometimes it’s better to say “I can’t right now.” Thank you to the Inasmuch Foundation, for the opportunity to serve on today’s panel, learn from the fellow panelists, and share perspective with this group of awesome fellows! Brightened my week.??

Jacqueline Gottlieb, president and CEO of the Hinton Rural Life Center in Hayesville and a graduate of our Rural Economic Development Institute, is featured in this month’s Alumni Spotlight. We appreciate her insights into rural leadership. What has been the impact of REDI or HGL on your leadership journey since completing the training, both personally and professionally? After attending both REDI and Leadership NC, I returned to my community and shared the opportunity with others. The push-back, total disinterest, and other mentioned roadblocks were fascinating to me. Some valid, some - just where you put your priorities. So, seven years ago, I worked to start a leadership program for our rural region. We are in the seventh year of hosting the program and will have over 100 alumni after the graduation in April 2024 from Leadership Chatuge Community Builders. What recent accomplishments, projects, initiatives, or points of pride would you like to share? Increasing awareness of the need for rural leadership development but the obstacles in attendance. Also, the critical need for solid infrastructure! What are the greatest assets in your rural community or region? The natural beauty. The retirees who are willing to volunteer. The people. What are the most significant economic development challenges facing your rural community or region today? Lack of knowledge about how the region operates, substance use, lack of economic opportunity, generational poverty, housing, transportation, etc. What advice would you offer to current or emerging leaders in rural areas? Listen closely and meet them where they are in order to make progress.

Following the events of last week, we would like to share a heartfelt thank you to our amazing partners at ELX for their unwavering support of the Event Leaders Exchange (ELX) Community.?? ELX would not exist without their generosity and belief in our mission to empower senior corporate event leaders. Their contribution to this community allows us to create meaningful connections, share invaluable insights, and drive innovation in the events industry. A Fireside chat with Alice Pung Thank you to Chi Kiet Vong and the team at Beta Alpha Psi Swinburne for inviting me along to a fireside chat on inclusive leadership and exploring your passions with one of my favorite all time authors Alice Pung! It was a honest, meaningful discussion on various topics which highlighted the progress we have made as a society, but certainly underlines the continued need to improve advocacy work on DEI. However, it is fantastic to see university students and future business leaders of tomorrow like Chi, Jacinta Lidonni Cuong Huynh Bilal Ahmed Artur Goncalves Jenny Rogers Jonathan Lew Parthenia K. Liam Hughes Pat Kijtaninwong Samuel Ellis Mai Bao Tram Le Hien Giang Nguyen who are passionate about inclusive leadership practices, and it certainly gives me a renewed sense of hope for the future of our global communities. Kudos to Dr John Webster and the accounting department at Swinburne University of Technology for taking lead on such important topics!

Why is grassroots community engagement important for you? In a conversation with an entrepreneur, I start to realize he may not know what it takes to engage grassroots community leaders. And, he knows how important it is to him and his vision. So here is why it might be important: 1. Does your success depend on local community support? 2. Is it easier to have large groups of passionate and connected people trust you once their leadership knows you? 3. Do you share the same interests and goals as grassroots community leaders? If you answered yes, to any of the above questions, it’s time for you to learn more about the local groups that share your vision. #grassroots #communityengagement #strategydevelopment
