President & Transformational Leader in Higher Education | Expert in Strategic Planning & Process Optimization | Pioneer in Molecular Engineering for Sustainability & Environmental Solutions
I would like to share some insights from the recent roundtable that I had the privelege to chair "Advancing Sustainability and SDGs: The Role of Universities in Fostering a Sustainable Future", and which was held during the 6th MENA Higher Education Leadership Forum organized by CLICKS' Public Programs. My heartfelt gratitude goes to two brilliant moderators who brought their expertise to our discussions: Mr. Patrick Paul Walsh, Vice President of Education at The Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Director of the SDG Academy. His insights into sustainable development and education were invaluable to our conversation. Alongside Dr. Paul, we had the inspiring Dr. Ashwin Fernandes, Executive Director for Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia at QS Quacquarelli Symonds. Dr. Fernandes' extensive experience in higher education and regional development undoubtedly enriched our understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This vibrant discussion underscored the impressive efforts universities are making in crafting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their core missions and strategic plans. Institutions worldwide are not just teaching sustainability but are embedding it in their operations, research, and community engagements. Our conclusion was clear: Universities are uniquely positioned to drive change by transforming education and fostering a new generation of environmentally and socially conscious citizens. The commitment witnessed today is a catalyst to tangible actions, notably in shifting mindsets, raising awareness, and nurturing future leaders equipped to advocate for sustainability. #Sustainability #SDGs #HigherEducation #FutureLeaders Dr. Narimane Hadj Hamou Nick Davis Ghassan Aouad Józefa Fawcett ? Over the last weekend, I was fortunate to visit my Alma Mater, the Sa?d Business School, University of Oxford, for our 5-year class reunion. It was a magical time filled with great lectures, chances to meet up and reconnect with old friends, and - blessed by fantastic weather - the opportunity to indulge in the beauty of Oxford. It also gave me time to reflect on our collective cohort and my personal journey through the past half-decade. Working in any industry or environment for too long - no matter how open-minded one might be - can give us a narrow view on what we believe to be pressing issues, or strong convictions how to solve and operate in a certain (business) environment. The weekend allowed us to appreciate the range of possibilities, opportunities, and challenges, we as a collective in the public and private sectors face. I, for example, am a commercial healthcare industry and academic biomedical research veteran. In our daily work within the healthcare industry, we are facing the task to create impact for patients globally, while operating in very regulated and often hierarchical structures. Within these we encounter habitual and hardwired ways of working. This is true for both healthcare systems and industry players to varying extent, despite change and adaptability being necessary to stay competitive. Case in point, we learned from Prof Jonathan Trevor how misalignment and assumed strategic alignment in organizations can hamper productivity and derail business success. He offered a sneak peek into his seminal work on overcoming misalignment and ensuring careful re-alignment as critical leadership and organizational core competence. Experiential learnings shared from business professionals in our cohort were another highlight. It was great to discuss a wide range of topics ranging from e.g. DeFin in the US, sustainability and transformational ESG efforts in Africa, and solving waste and load-shedding challenges for local communities in South Africa. This weekend was a stark reminder of the inspirational and impactful work many of our cohort are involved in. The value of the MBA most certainly does not reside only in the classroom. At its core, our joint MBA experience is made richer by the network of friends and acquaintances we make along the journey. A collective, which can challenge us to grow as leaders and individuals, and which can guide us towards new, diverse, and impactful perspectives. #OxfordMBA #ImpactFromWithin #WCE
