#MondayMotivation A few weeks ago, I was formatting a client's resume. No matter how I sliced it, I couldn't get the length or the look the way I wanted it. Then, Beyonce's "Ego" came to mind. It's too big..... It's too wide... It's too "long".... It won't fit..... Many job seekers also struggle to keep their resumes at acceptable lengths (1-2 pages on average). This is especially true for those who have 10+ years of experience. Although it may be a challenge to squeeezzzee that much information into two 8x11 pages, it's certainly possible. Try: ?? Trimming the fat and sticking to the results. ?? Using a font size of 10-12. ?? Selecting a smaller font like Garamond, Arial Narrow, Gill Sans MT or Calibri Light, etc since some fonts take up less space than others regardless of size. ?? Applying 1/2 inch margins all around. ?? Limiting major whitespace wherever possible. Your document shouldn't look too empty or crammed. Ashley, must a resume contain referees ?
Jordan Woodruff this might be useful for you!
Ruthless editing is the hardest but best strategy I’ve found for cutting the excess and really focusing on only the most vital info. Great advice, Ashley!
I love these tips! I also believe removing the laundry list of task and focusing on the accomplishment and results that you helped your previous employment receive is key to showing what you are capable of. Also - playing with the spacing definitely helps a bit!
My favorite trick is to go big on the last 2-3 positions (most recent experience in the last 5-10 years) and then simply list the positions prior to that below without any detail.? I'd make an exception for a position that had responsibilities or achievements closely aligned with the position I'm applying for, but only if my recent experience didn't cover it. You can also list appropriately related experience and achievements in a single section, then list the individual roles separately on a side bar.? This is not ideal, but if you're determined to fit a lot of experience into a maximum number of pages, it can reduce a lot of redundancy among prior roles.
Excellent tips, Ashley. You've got this covered!
Your tips are on point Ashley! When it comes to choosing resume fonts, I always recommend to have a look at your resume on your mobile device. Some fonts don’t read as clearly on mobile as they do on desktop.
This post couldn’t have come at a better time. I have revamped my resume today. Instead of being too literal and write everything, i have just skimmed the words, leaving the crucial bits to be asked during interviews. I also brought pictorial rep, and this really jazzes up and saves real estate at the same time . Still struggling to bring it down to 2/3 pages, project for tomorrow.
