The Defense Civilian Training Corps (DCTC) successfully presented the first DCTC Scholar Showcase in D.C.! On July 30th and 31st, scholars gathered in Washington, D.C. to present findings from project-based summer internships at the National Press Club. Scholars demonstrated their experience working on topics such as hypersonic threat trajectory analysis, acquisition data analysis and instrumentation, and space launch operations. During a commemoration on the Pentagon River Entrance Steps, 83 scholars met with Assistant Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Mr. Gary Ashworth; Chief Talent Management Officer, Mr. Brynt Parmeter; and Director for Science and Technology Foundations, Dr. Jagadeesh Pamulapati gathered to mark the outstanding accomplishments of the DCTC interns over the summer. Mr. Gary Ashworth, ASD(A), provided remarks to the students, “DCTC is a truly amazing and competitive program… Each of you, DCTC Scholars, have chosen a career in civil service. Serving the nation - it is a big mission that you're stepping up to - supporting our warfighters. As acquisition professionals you will develop and get them the capabilities to deter aggression, win the fight, and bring as many of them home safely as possible. I can't imagine a bigger calling in life. As the first group of DCTC scholars, you have actively been involved in shaping the program to the benefit of those that follow.”

Third SMCC interview posted today. Thank you so much to all of you past ‘Perishers’ for your submissions. Please keep them coming, you are crucial to sharing the lessons available on the course and encouraging others to follow in your footsteps. SMCC is ‘doable’ if you learn the lessons that will be available to you in your career as a Warfare Officer sooner than you may think. If you are a Warfare Officer, you’re already on an exciting apprenticeship to command. If you want to be one, or manage someone who does, get in touch. 10 seconds to realise you’ve got 10 seconds to let the periscope window clear, know what you’re looking at, make a decision, get the boat going in the right direction, give the right order, start the right stop watch and get the team with you. By this point it’s too late and the decision needed to be made 10 seconds ago. It’s not all about moments like this but they happen and how you prepare now, determines how much of that ten seconds you get that aren’t fogged out by stressful cognition.

AIRTEC attended The Patuxent Partnership (TPP) Defense Summit this week. It was another great local opportunity to support the important mission of TPP and engage with leaders in government and partners in the defense contracting industry. We often forget in the day-to-day grind and hustle why we do what we do but this was a great reminder of the big picture and the imminent threats that could be around the corner and why we must continue to work together and work through contracting, procurement, logistics, and budget challenges to be ready to protect the freedom we all enjoy. TPP is a non-profit member organization that works with government, industry, and academia to advance education through STEM-based initiatives, advance technology through events, and advance science and technology through the exchange of ideas, information, and data. TPP is a vital component of fostering workforce development. AIRTEC has been a member since 2019 and participates in their Southern Maryland 2030 Workforce Development Program which provides paid internship and apprenticeship opportunities in the area. This collaborative effort is with the Naval Air Warfare Center Aviation Division (NAWCAD), the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, and many educational partners including local colleges and schools, as well as industry. We look forward to having talented students from this internship program join us in Summer 2024! Located in the AeroPark Innovation District at the St. Mary's Airport, a few miles from the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, AIRTEC has been supporting the critical missions of customers for more than 30 years. We look forward to continuing to support TPP as an important organization that helps promote collaboration, learning, and networking to help grow the economy in the community and worldwide! #ThePatuxentPartnershipDefenseSummit #NavyLeadership #EconomicGrowth #AIRTEC #SouthernMaryland #AviationLeader #AirborneSolutions #CommunityBusinessConnections #GlobalMission

Happy Friday, Team! Many transitioning military members have asked me what strategies have worked for me outside the traditional norms. As a Cohort member of PreVeteran, we have found that the Military Transition 1.0 Model doesn’t set you up for post-military success. Most transition activities occur in the last 12 months of service, which is problematic because the service member's workload triples during this time. Military members tend to prioritize the 1X and 2X activities and delay the more complicated and unfamiliar 3X activities. Consequently, they enter SkillBridge internships and higher education institutions sub-optimally prepared. The bottom line is that the Military Transition 1.0 model doesn’t work for the military member, employer, or higher ed institution. It is essential to maintain a humble attitude, especially in environments such as an internship. Showing initiative from humility allows us to approach those with more experience, which is always beneficial in any work context. In a work environment, which tends to be conservative out of necessity, understanding the reason behind this conservatism is the first step. In the specific case of the naval world, the need to build means that will withstand one of the most hostile elements of our planet, the sea, justifies the conservative attitude where well-founded and tested changes are valued. Therefore, it is crucial to empathize with the environment, be receptive to opinions, show an entrepreneurial spirit, and a genuine thirst for learning and contribution. In this way, you are likely to find someone willing to guide you. And when that happens, it is important to be noble, respectful, and understanding, especially when thoughts driven by pride arise, such as the belief that a superior is wrong. Understanding these principles will make your journey in the naval world enriching, full of pleasant memories in the future. Riccardo Peirano
