Rural America is a target for industrial warehouses and distribution centers consuming hundreds of acres available for development. As a firefighter - think about fire in a 750,000 square feet horizontal structure. Despite sprinklers being the first response to a fire, there is still the need for rescue and emergency operations for the people who may be inside, and eventually, overhaul. Maybe the last shred of faith people have is in their firemen.'- Kurt Vonnegut, Hocus Pocus Multiple people were rescued from a deadly high-rise fire in Harlem today. The FDNY used rope rescues to extract at least 3 people from the burning structure today, when the entire department generally performs rope rescues 3-4 times in an entire year. The firefighters were guided to the victims by NYPD helicopters using FLIR to see through the smoke. This is that low-frequency, ultra-high-risk event that high-reliability organizations train and plan for....relentlessly. Today, despite the tragic death of one victim who couldn't be rescued, this is pretty much a success. A success only made possible by the relentless pursuit of excellence, the uncompromising application of the highest possible fucking standards. Nothing less will do. Period. As a deputy #fire chief I had to constantly balance available time, money and resources to ensure that our special operations teams were properly trained and prepared for low frequency, high impact missions. It wasn't always easy to see or justify the importance of those investments. After #HurricaneHelene, the picture is much clearer now. #FrancisScottKeyBridge in Baltimore, MD collapses in the middle of the night due to collision with a container ship. As a US Navy surface warfare officer, this is the one of the worst things that could ever happen. We spend tens and sometimes even hundreds of hours ensuring our #navigation track is safe especially as we are entering harbor understanding the effects of wind and current on our ship along our track. This is absolutely tragic and my heart goes out to all the families of the loved ones affected by this tragic accident. Not only #Baltimore, but the entire #DMV area, east coast, and many parts of #UnitedStated and the world will be affected via 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order effects of supply chain issues this will cause. While no foul play is currently suspected, as a #cybersecurity professional this brings to light just how critical and potentially catastrophic something happening to one of the hundreds of thousands of ships that transit in and out of port daily. These behemoths of human engineering and ingenuity are incredibly #vulnerable. If one was able to manipulate the COG (course over ground) vs heading off a ship weighing tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds as it were entering port, this could be catastrophic. I think about how many times on a US Navy #destroyer I navigated under the #Coronadobridge in #SanDiego. On USS Hopper(DDG-70), we passed under many bridges on deployment and even got to pass under #SanFrancisco’s famous #GoldenGateBridge to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the commissioning of USS Hopper.
