Great refresher! Participated in a design thinking workshop focusing on reframing question and creative problem solving. A common misconception I hear is that “I’m not a designer so I can’t think creatively” and is something which I have been trying to dispell through out my work and life. Sessions like these really help to show people how to brainstorm and ideate in a structured way, keeping the key topics front and centre and allowing you, your group or your organisation to ask the “right” questions before jumping straight to a solution. By asking why, why and why again can help you to reframe the question (generally quite far form the original expectation). Great session for everyone involved.
How might Design Thinking tools help companies become more lean and agile? We ran a high-energy "Reframing through Design Thinking" workshop with Gold Peak Industries this past Wednesday, and started with the above key question, reframed it by applying the 5 Why's, brainstormed 150 ideas in 15 minutes, and converged these down to 6 concepts - all in a matter of 3.5 hours! We were already practicing Agility...because all our activities were VISUALIZED, i.e we didn't spend too much talking - we spent more time doing, and then discussing the artifact. We used one very simple tool very effectively, a visualized 'concept brief' that had all elements of why the idea should succeed, fail, it's stakeholders, what to test, how to measure its success and milestones to delivery. When you turn a conversation into a 'visualized artifact', you might discover that it helps drive consensus faster and thus increases your productivity - as you can point to where there are gaps in the process/ brief/ planning (and avoid needing to deal with people's negativity, the no-sayers, aggressive attitudes etc are all neatly set aside). Think cave paintings, comunication via pictographs...aren't humans by nature more attuned to responding to drawing than to text? The Art of Balancing User Needs and Business Goals in Product Design??? In product design, one of the biggest challenges we face is finding the right balance between user needs and business goals. I’ve had the chance to dive deep into a project that reinforced or could improve this balance several times, and it has highlighted some important lessons that I’d like to share. ???Key Insights: - Empathy for the User: taking the time to conduct thorough user research, listening to pain points, and understanding the user's context is fundamental. Only then can we design solutions that are not just aesthetically pleasing but genuinely useful (sometimes I find myself straying a little from this aspect, but it is essential to always come back to this point). - Business Alignment: product design is not just about meeting user needs; it's also about driving business success. A great design can make an emotional connection with the user, but if it doesn't support the company's goals it won't be considered a success. - Continuous Iteration: design is not static. What works today may need to evolve tomorrow based on feedback and changing user behavior. An iterative approach, where you test, learn, and refine, is key. The faster we can gather insights from real users and apply them, the more agile and effective the design process becomes. - Collaboration is Crucial: we must work closely with product managers, engineers, marketers, and stakeholders to ensure that the final product not only delights users but also drives business value. Open communication and constant feedback loops are vital in making sure everyone is aligned. ???My advice is to always approach projects with an open mind and remain flexible. Focus on understanding both the user journey and the business goals. You may not get it right the first time, and that's okay! People can have brilliant ideas, but if they don't know how to communicate them effectively or if they don't give the same level of attention and effort to execution as they did to the idea itself, those ideas can end up going nowhere. Ideas come from problems need solutions but if the solution has a bad execution this will make it worser! This is why it's so important to pay attention to every step of the process, from the initial idea all the way through to the final implementation because very detail matters. Effective project management is a delicate balancing act between ideation and execution. The following are key factors in delivering a successful final product: ?? Pay attention to details: The devil is in the details, going through small details can make a huge difference in the user experience and ultimately determine whether the project is successful or not. ?? Consistency: Maintaining a consistent level of effort and attention throughout the project, from ideation to delivery, is crucial for ensuring that the final product meets the desired expectations. ?? Iterate, iterate, iterate: Be open to feedback and continuously refine your ideas to ensure that they align with user needs and business goals. Neglecting any of these can result in a project that fails to meet its full potential, or worse, leads to failure. A holistic and focused approach is essential to ensure that an idea is effectively communicated, refined, and ultimately executed to its fullest potential. Your customer will be your opponent in the end, and he will evaluate and judge whether what he sees represents the solution to his problem or not. Design thinking is a human-centered approach that will drive innovative and user-centric product development at WeWe. By adopting the principles of design thinking, I can ensure that our financial solutions are tailored to the real needs and pain points of our target users, resulting in products that truly resonate with them and provide meaningful value. Here's how I would incorporate design thinking methodologies into my approach as a product manager at WeWe: Empathize: I will conduct in-depth user research and user interviews to understand the financial needs, behaviors, and challenges of our target audience. This could involve interviews, observations to develop empathy and uncover insights that might not be immediately apparent. This empathy will inform every stage of our product development process. Define: Leveraging insights from the research findings to clearly define the core problems or opportunities we aim to address. This step involves crafting a well-articulated problem statement that captures the user's needs and sets the stage for ideation. Ideate: I'll engage cross-functional teams, including UX/UI designers, developers, marketers, and customer support representatives, in ideation sessions to generate a wide range of potential solutions. Using techniques like brainstorming, mind mapping, and prototyping will stimulate innovative ideas. Prototype: I'll create low-fidelity prototypes of the most promising ideas, allowing for early user testing and iteration. Prototyping helps validate assumptions, uncover usability issues, and gather valuable feedback before investing significant resources in development. Test: Conducting iterative cycles of user testing with the prototypes, gathering feedback and insights from real users.
