Continuing our focus on the total lifetime cost savings of GSHPs, a study conducted by Element Energy in collaboration with Kensa Contracting underscored the economic benefits and efficacy of GSHPs deployed at scale. The study conducted an in-depth analysis considering British weather patterns, geology, topography, and climate and concluded that GSHPs are remarkably efficient, achieving over 400% efficiency compared to the 280% average of ASHPs. As GSHP systems’ equipment is indoors, it boasts a life expectancy of over 25 years, as confirmed by the CGC and IGSHPA. The total annualised costs for GSHP systems are approximately 25% lower in retrofit scenarios and 20% lower in new builds, thanks to the extended lifetimes of GSHP systems. ?? Building a Sustainable Future Together with TDA Manufacturing ?? On June 12th, we had the pleasure of meeting with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) Materials Research Lab. To share resent research and new empirical designs using tire-derived aggregate (TDA). We discussed the ten key properties of TDA and seventeen practical use cases, engaging with MNDOT’s research division, management teams, and other stakeholders over a 1.5-hour session. The response was very encouraging. Attendees appreciated the insights into TDA’s development over the past 36 years, especially its potential for cost savings and innovative applications. This collaboration marks a significant step as MNDOT reviews their policies on TDA usage. Our commitment to the circular economy drives us forward, at MNDOT's recommendation and we're excited to seek partnerships with design-build firms to explore new markets and opportunities. ?? What will the Thermo-HydroMechanical and Chemical (THMC) behaviour of the Boom Clay be during and after excavation, construction and operation of a deep geological repository? ?? THMC behaviour of clays is a matter at the heart of the International Conference on Clays in Natural and Engineered Barriers for Radioactive Waste Confinement, in short the Clay Conference 2024 and of course also within the Belgian programme on radioactive waste disposal. During the 9th edition, held in Hannover this week, no less than 8 topics on this matter are presented by Belgian colleagues. Séverine Levasseur of #ONDRAFNIRAS presents the EURAD-GAS project. EURAD-HITEC will also be presented, as well as the work by Elke Jacops of SCK CEN on gas diffusion, PhD students Sophie De Kock and Hassan AL MAIS Ma?s have the opportunity to present their work on hydro-mechanical behaviour and chemical impact respectively and Miro Honty of #SCKCEN dives into the chemical impact of an underground repository on the Boom Clay.
