Today was the second Engineering Career Fair of the year at Iowa State University! It's so inspiring to talk to professional engineers about their companies, what's exciting about their work, and what they are looking for in future colleagues. A great motivator to finish this last year of school strong so I can start working with these awesome engineers! The Department of State (DoS) participated in the National Contract Management Association (NCMA) career fair in Tysons. On November 20, the DoS participated in?the NCMA Tysons Chapter Career Fair at George Mason University. With the theme "Empowering the Future," this event connected students, federal agencies, and businesses to build pathways to success. Representing the DoS were James Weldon, Trena Mills, Shaelyn Little, and Renée Hill, who shared insights about careers in federal service, the hiring process, and opportunities available within DoS. Through one-on-one sessions, they provided personalized guidance to students eager to explore public service careers. Ethics & Emerging Skills Following the impactful sessions from Day 1, where we explored career opportunities and industry trends, Day 2 took us deeper into the core principles that drive the energy and petroleum sector. We had two incredible sessions today, led by Engr Adamu Ibrahim and Engr Najeeb Ismail, each bringing their wealth of experience to the table. They shed light on some of the most critical aspects of the profession: ?? Ethics in the Industry: From seismic surveys to data collection, appraisal, and drilling, ethics remains at the forefront of every stage. Emotional intelligence, soft skills, and the ability to improvise were emphasized as essential traits for any professional. ?? Collaboration is Key: The industry thrives on partnerships, with companies relying on each other for tools, resources, and expertise. No one works in isolation; even companies not actively involved in operations are integral to the success of projects by providing vital tools and support. ?? The Role of Technology: We explored the importance of staying updated with cutting-edge technologies like Aspen HYSYS, SmartPlant, and data analytics tools. Understanding and mastering these technologies ensures a smooth transition into industry roles and boosts efficiency in operations.
