Scientists and engineers from Swansea University, the University of Exeter and the University of Bath are looking to cut emissions from the built environment by exploring a different approach to constructing tall buildings. The LOCAST (Low-Carbon Structures) project has received £1.2m in funding from?UK Research and Innovation?(UKRI). The team said that while tall buildings use urban space efficiently, constructing them has a high carbon cost compared to the same floor space spread across several shorter buildings. “We’re at a point where heating and lighting are so efficient that most of the lifetime climate emissions from any new building come from making the concrete, steel and glass that go into it,” Professor Ian Walker, an environmental psychologist from?Swansea University, who co-authored the funding bid, said in a statement. “Using less of these materials in tall buildings would put a big dent in the emissions from the built environment. But to do this, we need to understand how making tall buildings more lightweight would affect the people inside them.” Read more here ?? https://lnkd.in/enSBKj3i #theengineer #LOCAST #lowcarbon #construction #civil #engineering

???? Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future! ???? I'm thrilled to share the culmination of years of research and innovation in my PhD study into sustainable highway pavements. This journey has allowed me to dive deep into one of the most pressing challenges facing the infrastructure sector: broadening our knowledge and reducing the carbon footprint of pavement materials and methodologies, especially the use of concrete. ?? Innovative Concrete Mixes: My research explored advanced concrete mixtures aimed at significantly cutting direct emissions – a critical step toward greener construction practices. ?? Global Perspective: This international study not only focused on local issues but also provided insight into global pavement construction and material challenges, addressing the needs of both aging and new infrastructure systems around the world. ??? Supporting Governments: With infrastructure demands rising, my work tackled real-world problems governments face today, offering practical solutions for more sustainable, long-lasting roads and highways. As I continue this journey, I’m excited to connect with professionals and organisations dedicated to sustainability, innovation, and the future of infrastructure. Let’s collaborate and build a more resilient, eco-friendly future together! #Sustainability #CivilEngineering #PavementEngineering #GreenInfrastructure #CO2Reduction #Innovation #PhD #ConcreteSolutions #LeedsBeckettUniversity #ConcretePavement Ash Ahmed Sepehr Ghafari Dr Killian Ngong Picture below from the M6 Toll construction (David Murphy, 1993)

A fascinating discussion this morning at Curtins Building a Sustainable Future for Bristol event. Looking at the big picture around policy, framework planning, highways infrastructure and sustainable urban drainage and its easy to see how these issues in isolation can stall given the complicated interconnections. Policy can be slow to distil and implement, masterplanning requires multiple stakeholders, infrastructure is constrained by the existing built environment, innovation can take time and all the moving parts need bringing together to deliver a positive solution. A great final question from the audience summed up what many may have been thinking, asking the panel to give their views on how they see this all coming together. Nicely summed up by Stephen Beggs suggesting a look back in time is a great way to see how much can be achieved, but the big steps do take time. My summary; everyone has a part to play and if we all act now to change what we have influence over, through collaboration and aspiration we'll achieve the sustainable change and future we need. Thanks to Curtins and the panel Stephen Beggs Ben Smallwood CEng MEI Anthony Breach Ben Dawson Yazdi Batki for your insights.

Explore the innovative New Canaan Library, the first building in the U.S. to become a Design for Freedom Pilot Project. Download the case study now for an in-depth perspective. Conceived as a building for knowledge and learning, the New Canaan Library is a state-of-the-art space that seamlessly facilitates quiet contemplation and dynamic collaboration. It's also a trailblazer — unearthing the challenges of the Design for Freedom Pilot Process and how to approach ethical material tracing within the building materials supply chain. We partnered with New Canaan Library to explore and pursue the use of low-risk materials – materials less likely to be sourced through forced labor – during the building’s construction. Throughout the process, we collaborated with Centerbrook Architects and Planners, Turner Construction Company, and multiple subcontractors to trace raw and composite (engineered from two or more materials) building materials as far as possible within the supply chain. Download the case study to learn more about the New Canaan Library and why it is playing an important role in accelerating the Design for Freedom movement by raising awareness of forced labor in the building materials supply chain: https://lnkd.in/eFyEt_Sz Photo Credit: Jeff Goldberg/ESTO, Centerbrook Architects & Planners
