With the current opportunity provided by #H5N1, we recommend all #hospital #emergencymanagement and #infectioncontrol professionals consider purchasing this book and read Chapters 1, 3, and 4. Note how fast inundation of the hospital (and broader hospital system) occurred and reflect how this might or might not look should H5N1 unexpectedly exhibit sustainable human-human transmission. Initial impressions: 1. It appears hospitals were unaware of the status of air traffic connectivity to COVID-active areas of the world in the weeks and months leading up to the first cases. 2. It was surprising to see the first meeting of the Critical Care Council was held on February 27, 2020. 3. It is not clear to what extent warning intelligence was shared with the hospital system beyond media reporting, social media, and public health guidance- and more importantly what elements of warning intelligence drove what response action decision points. Hindsight is utterly 20/20, and bravo to #NewYork for publishing their after action. The question becomes, if you had to do this over again in regards to managing the First Wave, what would you do differently? #COVID #healthsecurity https://lnkd.in/g_xfJvSR

Excited to announce the publication of our latest paper with Maurine Mumo on the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Utilization. Our key findings were: 1. Utilization of EMS decreased during the pandemic. 2. Nighttime demand for EMS rose significantly. 3. Trauma-related calls increased. While these trends are clear, further qualitative data is needed to fully understand the underlying causes.?Read the full paper here to explore our discussion https://lnkd.in/gwRrFpXt Our research highlights the urgent need for better record-keeping and monitoring of EMS utilization to inform effective deployment in future crises. #Health #EmergencyServices #Research #COVID19 #PublicHealth

Our colleague Rishi Sud, MD, MBA, chief medical officer of Esse Health, penned an article for St. Louis Metropolitan Medicine on the benefits of 'risk adjustment' to promote better prevention strategies in healthcare today. We have the tools to improve population health -- but successful strategies require empowering physicians with resources and support so they can be high-performing in new models of care. #physicianwellbeing #valuebasedcare #healthcaretransformation https://lnkd.in/ef48Uk2T
