I've always had a love for the arts and found that some of the most influential artists in my life were my teachers. The path into the arts for me, and if I can do that for other young artists, then I know that I will have done my responsibility as a human and put some much needed blood back into the world. Through our presence and our ability to listen, we are able to lift and support whoever it is that requires our service with our gifts and our talents and our skills. I have seen the importance of community through my past service year and the personal growth of each student. It's about believing that your presence matters as you believe in what they used to think was impossible. Working with the students and getting to know the community as a whole changed me as a person and an artist. In my past service year, I realized just how impactful forming connections with students are and how something as simple as painting can evoke a sense of joy within the students. By the end of the year, my students had shared their work allowed with the class with the school community as they created a literary magazine. And beyond, as they're submitted to an international poetry contest. Through that experience, they were really able to see how much of an impact their voices can have. But I believe that the arts instills confidence in them that allows them to grow as a human. I think all those things together is what it means to serve and why I serve and why I do what I do.
