Hi, I'm Cornelius Tula. I'm the current artistic director, Erie, and also a 2022 area fellow. Doing the residency gave me an opportunity to get closer to the landscape of South Florida and really many of the uncovered stories, but I didn't even know growing up existed in the Everglades and finding my own connection. You know, I was originally inspired by a group of 2425 African American painters who were called the Florida Highwaymen or The Highwaymen, their story of liberating. Themselves and finding this space in economy that they created by painting the landscape of the coast of Florida and its landscapes and made me think a lot about what is my own perspective in this landscape and how I can begin to you know, depict that in my own work. And so thinking about contemporary mediums specifically photography at the time which I was really kind of immersed into was thinking about how I can tell a story through the landscape and talk about the idea that there are all these kind of hidden. Histories within Florida, specifically pertaining to Florida's Black community that I wanted to kind of talk about in the park, particularly sharing that through lighting and color, where in my work these things become kind of characters themselves and kind of embodying the space of the Everglades. So it really was exciting to engage with the space in this way, but also uncover so much history that tied me in my own family to this landscape. And I think that was just a really beautiful experience and exercise that now has me in the Everglades constantly. And constantly looking at other stories, feeling almost like a photojournalist in a way that kind of inspires paintings and collages and other works. And I think there's so many other histories that artists are uncovering in this space.
