In response to the race riots, we launched a campaign to advocate for safe and secure housing for asylum seekers. Safe Homes, Not Hotels calls for a closure of initial accommodation hotels, which were proven to be costly and dangerous, even prior to becoming targets of attack and arson during the race riots this summer. We ask for investment in social housing and for asylum seekers to be housed in the community, where they can rebuild their lives with dignity. Our Open letter to the Home Office, outlining our demands, was cosigned by 54 organisations working with refugees and asylum seekers, and over 10,500 members of the public. The Home Office recently responded. Rather than commenting directly on any of our asks, their template response outlined that they will "increase engagement with accommodation providers, police and key stakeholders" and ensure anyone taking part in riots "faces the full force of the law". This response is more than somewhat lacking. The focus on enhanced police powers does nothing to mitigate the direct cause of the riots: racist and anti-migrant political and media rhetoric, and the deliberate segregation of asylum seekers from wider society. On the Potter’s Wheel: My Reflection and Resolution for 2025. As we step into the New Year, I am deeply moved to reflect on migrants and their journeys, which I liken to clay on the potter’s wheel. Just as clay is shaped and refined through the steady, purposeful hands of the potter, migrants undergo profound transformation through their experiences. They face the pressures of displacement, the spinning uncertainties of adapting to unfamiliar environments, and the fires of systemic and personal challenges. Yet, through resilience and determination, many emerge as masterpieces, bringing strength, diversity, and innovation to the communities they join. The potter’s hands are key; they guide with care and intention, shaping the clay for its highest purpose. Likewise, the systems and policies that impact migrants must serve as those hands, providing support and opportunity rather than harm. It is our collective responsibility to create environments where migrants can thrive, contributing meaningfully to sustainable development and inclusive societies. For 2025, my resolution is clear: to be a part of the hands that guide this process with care, empathy, and purpose. I am committed to contributing to migration systems that empower and uplift, advocating for policies and practices that uphold dignity, equity, and opportunity for all. As I continue my journey in migration governance, I am inspired by the strength and potential of migrants and the critical role we all play in shaping a better world for them. Let’s step into this year with a renewed commitment to compassion, understanding, and action. Last week, the EU Parliament voted to adopt the Migration Pact, a package of reforms to the EU’s asylum and migration system, that will change European states’ response to people seeking protection for years to come. This is not a Pact which will serve the people of Europe nor people coming to Europe – it will weaken right to asylum, normalize immigration detention including for children and families, increase racial profiling, and usher in a some really harmful digital surveillance technologies at Europe's border. People Move. Always have, always will. Some people move for safety, and some to seek better opportunity and jobs. Many people, like myself, are living in a country other then their own. Treating people fairly and humanely, regardless of how or why they move, is in all of our interests. People and policy makers across Europe know this and many humane approaches exist. In recent years, we've seen people welcomed at Europe's borders, solidarity with those in need, reforms of policies pushing people into irregularity, and regularization being used give people a 'path back' to regularity. Infinite good policies and practices exist across Europe, particularly at city and local level, tried and tested approaches which deserve to be part of the common European approach. We all deserved better then this Pact which has settled on simply rubberstamping tried and failed approaches. Its time for the EU institutions and member states to take an evidence-based, future proof, whole-of-government approach to migration governance, give people affected by migration a voice at the table, and stop the race-to-the-bottom which has typified the European policy response. It was a busy week at Amnesty International European Institutions Office, I spoke to Al Jazeera, Euronews, Tonight Show (Ireland), Euractiv, Journal.ie and several other outlets on the Pact, where it falls short, and what we want to see instead. In the face of renewed threats of mass deportation under a future Trump presidency, our city has a unique responsibility to protect its residents, particularly immigrant families who are the backbone of our vibrant communities.
