While Arrow’s products and services provide critical fundraising support to local nonprofits every day of the year, there are certain days that stand out and serve as reminders of the importance of our work. Veteran’s Day is one of those days. We at Arrow are proud to serve Veterans organizations across the country. We appreciate our veterans and thank them for their service. In honor of Veteran’s Day, NBC4 in Columbus, Ohio told the story of how Veterans organizations benefit from Arrow’s charitable gaming solutions. The story featured American Legion Post 144, Save a Warrior (a nonprofit beneficiary dedicated to mental health and suicide prevention among Veterans and first responders) and Arrow "Local veterans and their families are giving back to veterans’ nonprofits and organizations through something called electronic charitable gaming, e-pull tabs and e-bingo machines that are mostly played in veterans’ halls... Many of the machines in Ohio VFWs and American Legion Posts are made by Arrow International, which was founded by an Ohio veteran. A common misconception is that gaming is a 501(c)(3) “charitable” activity. There is nothing inherently charitable about gaming (e.g., lotteries, raffles, casino-type activities). According to the IRS, it's a recreational activity and a business with possible UBTI implications. Although a charity may use the proceeds from gaming to pay expenses associated with its charitable programs, gaming itself does not further any charitable purpose. So gaming cannot be a more than an insubstantial purpose of a 501(c)(3) organization. NOTE: Many states and localities (like Chicago) regulate certain types of gaming activities conducted by nonprofit corporations. Be sure to check these laws in advance of hosting a fundraising event.

?? ???????????????????? ?????? ?????????? ???? ?????????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????? ????????????: ?????? ?????????? ???? ?????????? ?????? ?????? ?? In 2009, The Sims 3 became more than a life simulation—it became a tool for social reflection and real-world impact through Robin Burkinshaw’s blog, Alice and Kev (link in comments). The blog follows a homeless father and daughter, Alice and Kev, navigating life with no money or shelter. Inspired by The Sims 2’s "poverty challenge," Burkinshaw allowed their free will to shape their story, revealing the harsh realities of homelessness. One of the most powerful moments is when Alice, despite having almost nothing, donates her small earnings to charity. This unscripted act—generated by the game itself—prompted Burkinshaw and thousands of readers to reflect on their own lives. Readers were moved to action, with over 15,000 clicks on donation links and real-world contributions to homelessness charities. The success of Alice and Kev shows the untapped potential of video games as platforms for storytelling that inspire empathy and social change. It’s a reminder that even mainstream games like The Sims 3 can offer insights into humanity, challenge societal norms, and address real-world issues. As gaming professionals, let’s continue leveraging the power of games to inspire action and make a positive impact in our communities.

Friends, many of you know that in addition to my passion for games, I am an avid game collector, amassing over 2,000 items stored both at my parents' home and mine. Occasionally, as a token of appreciation for our community's contributions, fellow members and game manufacturers generously gift me items for my collection, as they know I never accept money. Still, our community operates on a strictly zero-profit basis, and I have always neutralized every penny of gifts by making equivalent contributions to charity. However, our family already commits substantial funds annually to causes primarily focused on essential human needs such as food and healthcare, details of which we prefer to keep private. Thus, moving forward and with Jess' agreement, I've decided to adjust our approach regarding just these game gifts from the community. I figured a gift from gamers should return to our community as a gift to gamers. Each gift I receive from a company or community member will now lead to an offsetting contribution to a special gamer ticket fund. This fund will be used exclusively to send as many of our members as possible to next year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC). This initiative was, by far, our most popular cost-bearing community activity over the last year, and I am committed to maximizing participation in 2025. For instance, First 4 Figures has kindly offered to send me a Sheikah Slate statue in recognition of our community's efforts. In response, I am setting aside $400 from my own pocket for GDC tickets next year, enabling two community members to attend. Upon receiving the statue, I will present a review of it and further discuss this new initiative. Last year, we facilitated 220 tickets for GDC, and I challenge our community to surpass that number in 2025. If you are interested in contributing to our GDC ticket fund, there’s no need for immediate donations. Simply express your interest, and I will add you to our list. Each expo pass costs $200. You can do this using our Ticket To Ride Form (Resource 14) from now through next March and make a pledge at: https://lnkd.in/dynRXCV9 I will keep adding money to the fund whenever a thoughtful community gift is received. Thank you again to First 4 Figures for sending two gamers to GDC 2025 and helping us use our collective passion for games to do even more good through our Ticket To Ride Program.
