We recently sat down with Marcus du Sautoy, Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford, to discuss his views on mathematics. "Mathematics is about the big stories, not the grammar of the subjects. That's what you're beginning to learn when you go to university," he shared. For Marcus, mathematics involves a lot of intuition, creativity and imagination. At IE School of Science and Technology, we want students to understand both the technical and the more intuitive side of every field, so that they can push the boundaries and apply their skills in unexpected ways. Students of the Bachelor in Applied Mathematics learn to apply mathematics across a variety of disciplines, enabling them to break down silos and spark innovative solutions to real-world problems. I'm sure this will be a very unpopular opinion but I think it's a real shame the formulas are going to be given for GCSE Physics exams. In all subjects, students need to memorise information. Arguably, there is too much memorisation, but if they have to memorise anything I would want it to be the most important aspects of the subject. For physics, I think students should have to know what Newton's second law is. They should be able to define density. They should understand what we mean by acceleration. Now these have been relegated to a pick and mix of letters that students will be taught to simply put numbers into with no understanding. As a secondary point, Maths and Physics are only subjects getting adjustments for COVID. This only exacerbates the misconception that these subjects are too difficult.

Congratulations Dr. Rachel Arnold! Dr. Arnold was recently awarded a Virginia Tech College of Science Instructional Grant. The grant supports the development of an instructional handbook that will leverage empirical findings from The Proofs Project (https://lnkd.in/eXpVKkuz) to improve instruction in Math 3034 (Introduction to Proofs) and enhance introductory proofs students’ learning experiences. It is well documented in the literature that the concept of proof and proving poses significant challenges for undergraduate mathematics students (see Stylianides et al., 2017, for a review). The focus of this project is to create lesson-by-lesson guides, called Lesson Analysis Manuscripts (LAMs; Corey & Jones, 2023), that will empower instructors to implement RBI both effectively and efficiently.

Dreaming of exploring a degree in Mathematics? ?? Meet Dr. Susie Brooks, an associate professor of Mathematics and Philosophy! Since she was a child, math has been her favorite subject, and she was not surprised when she chose to pursue it in college. "I study mathematics because I find it interesting and beautiful, not because I wish to use it in other related fields to solve problems. Now that I instruct primarily engineering students, I’m becoming more interested in how topics in mathematics apply to the field of engineering," Brooks said. With her research area in Knot Theory, she explored how mathematics touches on so many areas, and well...it just stuck!
