I'm wishing zero happy returns and a very bad new year to the hackers who just targeted a Victorian school with a ransomware attack. #ransomware #cybersecurity?

School Leaders please start taking your cyber security seriously ?? this could be you next! it's not a case of if it's a case of when. If you invest in physical security; entry systems, steel gates, CCTV, alarms, security staff. Information security is no different apart from we cannot see it. School information is equally important. This is just one of the latest examples and Mark has put some valid information here. ?????? Headteacher and MAT Executives! Speak to your IT leaders and suppliers and ask are we doing enough? In most cases this is not always about more tools (although they can help). Stick it on your School improvement plan and support your IT team along this journey it needs to be a collective ettort. Unfortunately it won't be something you turn on and job done, you will need to review, test and improve. ??Like a fire alarm we must tell people how it works and make sure people know what to do!

Ransomware attacks are surging at an alarming rate, with incidents rising 73% between 2022 and 2023, according to the Ransomware Task Force. Higher education institutions, often viewed as rich targets by cybercriminals, are becoming increasingly vulnerable in this era of "big game hunting." Yet, cybersecurity education remains largely underrepresented in many academic programs. For a deeper dive into how organizations, including healthcare, can manage cyber risk, check out my book, available here: https://bobchaput.com/ #HigherEducationCybersecurity #HigherEdSecurity #DataProtection #Cybercriminals

Toronto school board reports ransomware attack on test environment. Why it matters: 1. This ransomware attack on the Toronto District School Board's test environment signals another increasing risk in cybersecurity, with hackers now targeting school systems, besides traditional targets like companies and municipal institutions. 2. While no immediate impact has been seen on the TDSB's official systems, the attack highlights the critical importance of robust cybersecurity protocols, especially in separate testing environments, as they can also become targets of cyber attacks. 3. This incident underscores the need for continuous vigilance and cooperation with cybercrime agencies. Notifying authorities and experts, as seen with the TDSB, aids in managing the situation, identifying threats, and informing affected individuals in due time if their information was compromised.
