The fourth Saturday of November is worldwide Holodomor Memorial Day. This day is one of the most solemn in Ukrainian culture, as it commemorates the millions of Ukrainians lost to genocide in the 1932–33 famine caused by the Soviet Communist regime of Joseph Stalin. "In 1932-33, Joseph Stalin, the leader of the former Soviet Union, imposed policies that led to the confiscation of livestock and crops grown by farmers in Ukraine. His government officials searched homes for hidden food, seized private property, forbade citizens to leave their villages to find food, and closed the borders of Ukraine to prevent people from searching for food elsewhere. This resulted in a human-made famine, a genocide of the Ukrainian people by starvation, known as the Holodomor. Food was used as a weapon to starve the farmers into submission under Stalin’s dictatorial rule." - Holodomor Research and Education Consortium The tragedy of Holodomor was denied for decades until information became available after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Now, the genocide is remembered around the world. Today, we invite you to light a candle in memory of the millions of innocent Ukrainian citizens who wrongfully lost their lives. May we recall the survivors of this genocide and thank them for sharing their stories so that this tragic part of Ukrainian history will never be forgotten. Today, let us stand with Ukraine. #Holodomor #ukraine #standwithukriane #HolodomorMemorialDay #memorial

My great-grandmother and great-grandfather ended up in Siberia under circumstances unknown to us. In our family, we rarely spoke about it, and we knew little about the forced population replacements. We also didn’t understand the importance of having a critical mass of people with a Ukrainian identity to defend our statehood. But Moscow knew this well and methodically deported Ukrainians to Siberia while resettling russians in their place. When my grandmother was born in Siberia, rumors began to circulate about a famine in Ukraine. “That’s impossible! If we, living in cold Siberia, have food to eat, how could there be famine in Ukraine with its rich black soil?” Unable to believe these rumors, they took their one-year-old daughter and returned to Ukraine, only to witness one of the greatest crime against humanity committed by comrade Stalin — the genocide of the Ukrainian people through an artificially created famine, which claimed the lives of 4 to 7 million Ukrainians. The Soviet government hid the crime, downplayed the numbers, and Russia continues to do so today. They manipulate historical data, editing Wikipedia and labeling the famine a “mistake in agricultural policy.” They also argue that “not only Ukrainians suffered.” This is partially true, as Ukraine, with its fertile lands, was the breadbasket of the Soviet Union. By seizing all the grain and food supplies from Ukraine, they caused hunger not only in Ukraine but also in parts of their rural population. However, the scales were incomparable: in Ukraine, famine took 41% of the population, while in other Soviet regions, it was up to 6% of the rural population. But we know the truth. We won’t let history be rewritten or crimes be concealed. We will not forget. ??? #holodomor

The fourth Saturday of November is Holodomor Memorial Day, an opportunity to reflect on painful parts of Ukrainian history whose effects continue haunting many today. Between 1932-33, the Soviet government orchestrated a man-made famine to suppress resistance to the communist regime. They purged villages by killing farmers and anyone who fought for their right to land & livestock. Gathering up food, the goal was to starve out the Ukrainian nation and the strength of the Ukrainian spirit. The true death toll of the genocide will never be known, but an estimated 5-7 million innocent Ukrainians perished from hunger. The cruel actions of the Soviet Union would forever change Ukrainian lives - making every breadcrumb precious for decades to come. In 2023, recognised Holodomor as a genocide against the Ukrainian people. Since 2017, LUkraine has been working hard for the adaptation of this resolution, an acknowledgement of Stalin’s wicked regime. We thank Luxembourg for understanding Ukrainian history and the importance of ensuring that truth prevails. Today, it’s a precedent for russia’s continuous efforts to crush Ukraine. But our freedom will prevail. #lukraine_advocacy #holodomor #holodomorremembranceday Photo credit: Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute

Holodomor The Ukrainian Genocide "In the case of the Holodomor, this was the first genocide that was methodically planned out and perpetrated by depriving the very people who were producers of food of their nourishment (for survival). What is especially horrific is that the withholding of food was used as a weapon of genocide and that it was done in a region of the world known as the ‘breadbasket of Europe’.” – Prof. Andrea Graziosi, University of Naples. Commemoration of Holodomor ???? Holodomor refers to the death by starvation of millions of Ukrainians, through the Soviet Union's policy of collectivisation of agriculture against the will of the rural population, in 1932-1933. According to sources Holodomor killed between 2.5 and 6 million people. Discussion of the Famine was proscribed and even officially denied in the USSR until late 1987. 'The terms Great Famine, artificial famine and organized famine were widely used in diaspora circles prior to the now widely accepted term Holodomor.' The term Holodomor, derived from the Ukrainian words for hunger (holod) and extermination (mor), appeared in the 80s. It is commemorated every year on the?fourth Saturday of November. Since Russia launched the full-scale war against Ukraine in February 2022, several countries recognized the Holodomor as genocide against the Ukrainian people. The?European Parliament?recognized the Holodomor in 2008 as a?crime against humanity, ruling that it was an induced famine and a “crime against the Ukrainian people and against humanity.” In 2022, the European Parliament qualifies Holodomor as genocide. Does this remind you of something similar today? #walkforeurope #Holodomor #famine #killingsbystarvation #holodomorgenocide #ukraine #europeanparliament #genocide #Ukraine #sovietunion #Staline

Today marks the annual remembrance day of the 1932-1933 Holodomor famine in Ukraine. This year is the 91st commemoration of the Holodomor. This year, we remember the millions of Ukrainians starved to death by Stalin’s genocidal regime, as russia is committing yet another genocide against the Ukrainian people. Ninety-one years ago, the Soviet regime systematically seized Ukrainian grains and farms as a tactic to destroy Ukraine’s national identity. Today, russia is stealing millions of tons of Ukraine’s grain, shelling Ukrainian cities, and demolishing cultural sights as a continuation of the centuries-long aggression. russia has abducted about 20,000 Ukrainian children, attempting to steal Ukraine’s future through indoctrination, turning them into russian citizens, and robbing them of everything Ukrainian. We unite in memory of everyone lost to ruthless violence and genocide. We unite in honor of all those who, throughout history to today, have been defending the Ukrainian nation. We unite in resilience, truth, and courage that will lead us to victory.

Letting russia keep parts of Ukrainian territories will mean genocide of Ukrainian people. Some think that if a country is occupied, people may just continue living peacefully under a different flag and pay taxes to a different government. That’s not the case. Very often the “peace” is followed by genocide from the occupier. There are lots of examples. A Maori-Moriori case is a very good example. If you do not know, here is a recap: a ship full of Maori warriors landed on the Island populated by the peaceful people of Moriori who lived without war for centuries. Instead of fighting, Moriori let Maori occupy their territories hoping that they would peacefully share the resources of the Island. The result? Maori hunted Moriori like animals, most were killed, some were even eaten, and some were enslaved. They were forced to speak the Maori language. The holy places of Moriori were turned into toilets. It happened in 1835–1860s. If you think that this cannot happen in Europe today, let me remind you what happened to Ukraine after it lost the war to russia in 1919 and became the part of USSR. The “peace” did not bring Ukrainians any good. In 1933, in the Holodomor genocide up to 7 million Ukrainians died from hunger because their food was taken away. In 1937, most Ukrainian scientists, artists, writers, and poets were executed. The Ukrainian language was prohibited. Now, in occupied areas of Ukraine, you may get serious problems even if you speak Ukrainian. In Bucha, russians were executing the teachers of history and Ukrainian literature. When the aggressors invades your territories, war is safer than “peace”, because fewer people get killed. Also, dying in a fight makes more sense than being taken to slaughter like a cattle in the middle of the night by the occupying regime. That’s why Ukraine is fighting. And when some politicians propose “negotiations” without russia leaving Ukraine, they either do not understand or simply do not care about the millions of lives they put in danger by this "peace". It's not just about the land, it's about millions of people living under occupation. Russia must lose the war. You cannot reward them with any part of Ukraine, because it will only mean genocide and further aggression.

Horrific events of #Holodomor 91 years ago explain the nature of the russian war against Ukraine, both of which are genocides of Ukrainians. In 1932-33, western countries kept buying grains from the Soviet Union despite knowing its origin and horrific price; the same is true today, only buying oil and gas. On both occasions, soviet/russian propaganda flourished. Guess which of the Soviet leaders is an icon of leadership for Putin? If you want to understand better what is going on now, learn about Holodomor from Anne Applebaum's book Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine, where you will find both facts about the event and how it explains today's world. Or watch the movie "Mr. Jones," which is about Gareth Jones, a journalist from Wales, whose missions to Ukraine in times of famine shed light on the Holodomor to the Western countries. Or even just read the Wikipedia article about Holodomor and American historian and researcher of Holodomor James Mace. From 1986 to 1990, Mace served as the executive director of the U.S. Commission on the Ukraine Famine, in Washington, D.C.The result of the commission's work was a report to the US Congress published in 1988 and a three-volume set of 204 testimonies about the famine of 1932–1933 in 1990. The conclusions of the report, in particular, stated that Joseph Stalin and his people committed genocide against Ukrainians in 1932–1933. In memory of millions of people who died starving while living on the one of world's most fertile soils, please, keep supporting Ukraine now to prevent millions of deaths from both war and starvation in the poorest countries in the world, since russia destroys not only Ukraine but undermines world food security and contributes significantly to climate change.
