?? While watching Selection Sunday I couldn't help but to think about a project I did during my undergraduate at Purdue: How does March Madness impact college application rates? Initially inspired by the remarkable surge in application rates following Florida Gulf Coast's Cinderella run in 2013, which saw a increase of 27.5% in application rates, I embarked on a journey to uncover the true correlation between March Madness success and application numbers. Utilizing tournament data from the 2019, 2021, and 2022 seasons, alongside key application factors such as seed likelihood, college rank, school size, and more, my study aimed to shed light on this phenomenon. What emerged from the analysis was both surprising and enlightening: while powerhouse schools often steal the spotlight, it's the smaller institutions that experience the most significant shifts in application rates post-March Madness. In fact, my regression models revealed that underdog teams and smaller schools tend to see a more pronounced increase in applications following successful March Madness runs, highlighting the transformative impact of sporting success on these lesser-known institutions.
