I’m a big fan of Duolingo’s brand and love how they’ve designed this new NYC office. Designing an office presents so many different considerations than product design. Yet we can identify many parallel design principles. Occupants = Personas Rooms = Screens Paint = Color Bench = Visual resting points Lighting = Light/Dark mode Decor = Decorative elements Hardware = UI Wayfinding = Nav and labels So many more… This is my approach whether I’m designing a museum exhibit or an app. It helps me consider the broader experience and I can apply thinking from the virtual world to the physical. Can you think of other parallels across design disciplines that you have used?

Working my butt off (Quite literally) I've been thinking a lot lately about the different paths we take in our careers, especially when it comes to creativity. Both of my parents are in creative fields: my mom works her magic as a beautician, while my dad's all about crafting beautiful furniture for homes and offices. But here's the thing: while I'm totally into the creative scene too, I see myself thriving in a different kind of environment. Unlike my parents, who are out there hustling all day long, running around to meet clients and manage supplies, I'm more drawn to a modern, cozy workspace. So, as I was diving into "The Minimalist" recently, I had this lightbulb moment: why not create an illustration to show how different our worlds really are? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! If you asked me if you should buy a business, get married, and have your first child in the span of 1 year, I probably wouldn’t recommend it – but hey, that’s my story! That’s right, Tavis and I officially took over ownership of Printing Image in September of 2022 and I had our son, Atlas, in June of 2023 – exactly 9 months later. While this timeline of events wasn’t planned on purpose, it has opened my eyes to see the beauty of growth and change in some unexpected ways. Pushing myself to learn the ins and outs of the print industry while also learning the complexities of how to parent a newborn. Watching with pride when the shop hits monthly sales goals alongside the immeasurable awe of seeing Atlas reach his own milestones. Being a “mompreneur” (a title I’ve only recently come to learn about) has taught me most though about how much I am capable of. While some days are admittedly harder than others, especially when running low on Zzz’s, overall I have found that my experience being both a mom and business owner to be overwhelmingly positive. Some days juggling the 2 roles looks like wearing a sleeping baby on my back while I run the printers (the hum of paper speeding through the print drums has become our personal version of a lullaby), other days it looks like bringing Atlas along to client meetings, after-all he is Knoxville’s youngest print employee! And, on days when Atlas and I really need it, it looks like trusting the shop to my skilled employees and embracing mom life 100% for the day. So, to the women out there who are dreaming of both motherhood and business ownership, I say this: Don't let fear hold you back. Embrace the chaos, define your own success, and build a life that celebrates all the roles that make you whole.
