New Book | Engineering With Nature: Natural Infrastructure for Mission Readiness at U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Installations This publication illustrates how natural infrastructure can directly enhance mission readiness while delivering additional benefits. See the four key EWN principles—Mission Assurance, Using Natural Processes, Broadening Benefits, and Promoting Collaboration—reflected in actionable solutions featured in the book. The eight installations featured highlight the driving force behind these integrated solutions to address hazards like coastal flooding, erosion, drought, and extreme heat—risks regularly faced by military installations. Check out the report for practical examples of resilience-building solutions: https://lnkd.in/gBnJSers Jacobs, Jeff King, Emily B. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering With Nature? (EWN) Program, in collaboration with the Department of the Navy, is exploring the use of natural and nature-based features to enhance mission readiness and resilience at eight installations across the country. The effort has produced a publication, “Engineering With Nature: Natural Infrastructure for Mission Readiness at U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Installations,” which illustrates some of the current challenges and hazards experienced by military installations. It also highlights activities at eight U.S. Navy and Marine Corps military installations to achieve increased resilience through natural infrastructure. Featured installations include Naval Air Station Key West in Florida, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina, and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii. Three straightforward recommendations to apply lessons learned so far from the troubled Frigate program that we should have learned from previous Navy and Coast Guard programs already.
provocative article by Professor James Holmes of the US Navy War College. This quote from the article gets deterrence so right: "deterrence [is] .... the product of our military capability, our willpower to use it, and the degree to which the opponent we aspire to deter believes in our capability and willpower... [it] is the product of multiplying—not adding—the three constituent factors. If any one factor in a multiple is zero, deterrence is zero. Algebra says so...." This is, in a nutshell, is the problem of the US Navy Shipbuilding program: nobody, including the PRC, believes it.
