Here's why I think a contingent recruitment model is better for your hiring needs. Motivation. Recruitment companies running a contingency (That's a no hire, no fee model for those confused) model don't pay their staff a high enough base salary for them to coast through life. I'm not saying it's right and you need to do your due diligence but a good contingency recruiter will get you the best candidates out there because it's a sales role at it's core. One of my favorite aspects of recruiting is the flexibility to design your ideal work structure. For the first five years of my recruiting career, I worked at a contingent agency exclusively on a, you guessed it, contingent basis. For the last five years, I've explored a variety of recruiting arrangements: - contingent (no fee until success) - container (deposit to start with balance due upon success) - retained (three equal installments: 1/3 deposit + 1/3 progress payment + 1/3 upon success) - monthly retainer (flat fee as a contract internal recruiter) - exclusive contingent (agreed upon flat fee for each of 10 hires with exclusivity on the assigned roles) I believe each has its own place, but I do have favorites. I'll explore each of these in more depth in the near future. I aim to: 1. Help startup hiring teams evaluate their options and 2. Encourage independent recruiters to craft the recruiting practice they want to own.
