??? Is the Grid Ready for Winter? North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC)’s 2024-2025 Winter Reliability Assessment sheds light on key challenges: ? Rising electricity demand, up at least 2% across most regions. ? Retirements of coal and gas plants are creating capacity gaps. ? Extreme weather could strain resources in regions like Texas, MISO, PJM, and New England. ? Natural gas delivery remains a concern in areas with limited pipeline capacity. Progress is being made: new cold weather standards and better coordination showed results during the January 2024 Arctic blast. Preparation and reliable planning remain critical as demand keeps rising. Find out how Arcus Power Corp can help you with real-time insights into demand, generation, and risks, making it easier to prepare for winter challenges. Wind power is cheap, clean and reliable. It could also prevent Fukushima-like disasters in the future – according to a new study from Surrey scientists. They suggest that turbines can power a reactor’s cooling systems, avoiding meltdown when the main power supply is disrupted. #SurreyResearch #SustainableEnergy #WindPower #CleanEnergyFuture #sdgs #earthquake #Fukushimadisaster https://ow.ly/E8Ep50RZVlJ

This is the Little Engine that Did.......our 2008 Coleman Powermate 5000 which did what Centerpoint Energy and the entire "central station" power system could not. It kept our fans, refrigerator and lights on during the Beryl outage period July 8 - 18th, making our Kingwood house liveable, but not comfortable. So having performed so well over it's duty life, covering Hurricanes Ike thru Beryl, the Uri Freeze and various minor derechos and other disturbances in the meteorological force we will retire this Gem of Generation at yearend. A $600 investment parlayed into emergency relief and offshore coring applications for mobile power when needed. QED: Distributed Generation to the rescue, no matter how fueled - gasoline, solar, propane, battery storage, wind, diesel or literally anything else - it's not what you've got it's how you use it!

As we go into the coldest months of winter, it is important to recognize what it takes to maintain a reliable and resilient electric grid, remembering the lessons learned from extreme winter events in Texas and the Eastern US in the past few years. As electricity is the backbone of a healthy economy, a resilient natural gas infrastructure is the backbone of a healthy electric system. Despite the overall warming trend, climate change brings wide swings in extreme temperatures which could mean more frequent polar vortexes, blizzards, and ice storms. The most recent report released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission(FERC) and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC)on the impacts of winter storm Uri on Texas’ power system highlights the importance of coordination and cooperation between the electric and natural gas sectors to improve the reliability of the bulk electric system in winter months. According to a recent NERC report, the eastern two-thirds of North America is at an elevated risk of power outages this winter given extreme conditions. Increased voluntary coordination and collaboration between the power and natural gas sectors is a key element in maintaining a resilient electric grid this winter. Over half of all major electric utilities in the U.S. also own natural gas assets, like our Atlanta-based Southern Company, creating greater potential for coordination between the two sectors. #Energy #Gas #Electric

Weather extremes demand energy resilience – is Texas ready? ??? From hurricanes to heat waves, extreme weather is testing America’s power grids. Texas has shown resilience by leading in wind and solar power while investing in grid winterization. Yet, challenges like grid isolation and soaring demand call for a multifaceted approach. True resilience requires infrastructure improvements and behavior shifts. Want to learn more about how #ERCOT compares to other regional grids? #WindEnergy ?Lightning Strikes as a Major Threat to Wind Energy? Yesterday, #WindTech24 witnessed the wind industry's keen interest in the topic of lightning strikes. During Stéphane's presentation, "Use and Benefits of Lightning Data-Driven Preventive Maintenance for Wind Turbines," many questions have been raised about lightning meteorology & detection, and, most importantly, available solutions. ? Indeed, lightning poses a significant threat to the wind energy sector, leading to production losses, substantial repair costs, and jeopardizing the safety of field personnel. The reality of lightning strikes on WTGs: - 4 to 8% of all turbines sustain lightning strike damage annually (#IEC 61400-24), - 60% of operational losses in turbines are attributed to lightning strikes on blades (GRS expert claim services). ?? To continue discussing this subject with a major impact on the wind power industry, don't miss our upcoming keynote on our revolutionary solution - Lightning Check Advisor - that optimizes wind turbine maintenance following thunderstorms. ?? On Thursday, June 20 at 10.00 AM (CEST), you can engage with our specialists to discuss your lightning-related challenges and discover our innovative tool for managing your lightning risks. ? Time for the New West=BC/AB/SK/MB Economic Alliance building on existing natural gas infrastructure like Washington has i.e.: "Washington is also a major conduit of natural gas produced in British Columbia and Alberta, home to some of the lowest-cost supply in the world. The Gas Transmission Northwest pipeline is capable of flowing 2.7 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) as it passes into the state from Idaho on its way to Oregon. The Northwest Pipeline has a peak capacity of 3.8 bcf/d and enters Washington in Sumas, southeast of Vancouver, facilitating gas supply for Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado."
