Large-scale mass timber development projects bring environmental and social sustainability to our workplaces, along with a uniquely beautiful aesthetic. But the conversation around today’s modern timber development can leave some developers and investors hesitant. There is a desire for the industry to adopt more environmentally conscious practices and the potential for mass timber projects to influence the world's carbon output. There is no disputing that the adoption of mass timber indicates a noteworthy shift towards sustainable construction and lower carbon emissions, but what is the catch? At a time when reliable data is lacking, it is important to review lessons learned from real projects that have come to fruition, to confidently answer the question, "Is it worth it?" https://lnkd.in/gnZ8X4TD

Boulder, Colorado, is setting a high standard for sustainability with its ambitious circular economy practices. With a goal to reduce emissions by 80% by 2050 and achieve “zero-waste,” Boulder’s Deconstruction Ordinance 8366 mandates that residential and commercial projects divert 75% of materials from landfills. A standout example is the sustainable deconstruction of Boulder Community Hospital, where 93.5% of materials were diverted and salvaged structural steel was repurposed for the new Fire Station 3. This initiative highlights how circular economy practices can extend the lifecycle of construction materials, reduce waste, and lower embodied carbon emissions. The project demonstrates that deconstruction and reuse of structural steel can be both practical and cost-effective, paving the way for future sustainable construction practices. ??Read more: https://lnkd.in/e88xAjC3 #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #ConstructionInnovation

Think back to former centuries and you might imagine homes built from wood. ?? As concrete took over, we lost prior know-how. ? But as one of humanity’s biggest carbon emitters, the #construction industry needs to reconnect with biobased materials to reduce the built environment’s impact on #climate. ? Timber presents a solution, but a complex one, especially for technology, policy and supply chains.? ? From utilising sustainable forestry that creates carbon sinks ? to working with pilot cities in Europe ? to changing material demand and procurement processes…Built by Nature, Cities4Forests, and C40 Cities are among those working to make wood mainstream again. ?????? ? Get this right, and we could soon start to see the urban built landscape transformed. ? For more insights into how exactly this can be achieved, check out what Paul King & Scott Francisco shared with CityChangers.Org recently:?https://lnkd.in/dAViQzYJ ? And let us know about your city’s experiences of constructing from timber!

If it is designed to be disassembled, a timber structure can be moved (almost) anywhere. The Rothoblaas automated timber warehouse was designed and built to be removable: with a screwdriver, and a little bit of time, it could be disassembled to retrieve timber and metal elements or to be reassembled elsewhere. We made this choice because being able to rethink structures over time, allowing single or modular reuse of components, is an investment in adaptability and sustainability, two pillars of sustainable construction. Pillars we share with WOODCIRCLES, the European Union co-funded project that develops solutions for the circular use of timber building materials in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, waste production and material consumption. We are already a part of it, are you? https://woodcircles.eu/ #WOODCIRCLES_eu
