HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital CEO Robert Meade is retiring - after nearly 20 years as CEO. He started there in 2005 - same year as I started at the Observer Media Group. Have had the privilege of interviewing Bob several times - he's a thoughtful and articulate leader - and an excellent interview. Reached back into the Business Observer archives and found two nuggets from a Q&A in April 2005 when he started. Excerpts: Best advice: "The best way to be successful in this role (hospital administrator) is to focus on surrounding yourself with good people in the roles of responsibility. It doesn't matter how hard you work, if you don't have the people in those roles you won't succeed..." This one isn't advice - but it's interesting. He said this 19 years and six months ago...the more things change the more... Immediate challenges in new position: "The challenge here is like most hospitals are facing with the nursing shortage. Also, you have limited resources. With the baby-boomer generation continuing to get older, we're continuing to use up more and more resources." Congratualtions on your retirement Bob! As I approach my retirement from MAPMG I want to share a message/quote from Dr. Robert Pearl that I have kept on my computer for 5+ years to help me remember the true meaning of being a physician: Three Lessons: When frustrated by the challenges of American Medicine, I remind myself of these three lessons. First, it's a privilege to be a physician and have the power to change people's lives for the better. And when the mission driven spirit of physicians is released, amazing outcomes can be achieved. Second, no matter how much we know, as physicians we can learn much from others. Finally, caring and compassion often are the most powerful forces for healing.

As we begin the #NationalPhysicianWeek (March 25-31), here are my Top 5 wishes: For patients 1. I wish for good health for all. If there is some way I can help you achieve this, do let me know 2. For those who have an ailment that needs to be taken care of, I wish for good access to care. I hope you can reach the right physician, at the right time, in the right place without worrying about the financial burden it may cause For physicians 3. I wish for you to have the same fire that you had when you started medical school. I hope you wake up excited to go to work every day and that burnout is not/will never be a part of your vocabulary. But if you are feeling tired of the work you do, I hope you have the courage to stop, rethink, and pivot if you need to. As physicians, we like to grit our teeth and be persistent no matter how bad the situation gets, sometimes at the cost to ourselves, friends, families, and ultimately the patients themselves. Adam Grant has said and I agree, "There's a fine line between heroic persistence and foolish stubbornness. Sometimes the best kind of grit is gritting our teeth and turning around" 4. I wish for great colleagues, a supportive staff, and the most ideal team members when you are down in the trenches. Since we are wishing, let's throw in a fantastic EMR too, a one that truly decreases the burden of your everyday life! 5. Last but not least, I wish for the best patients for you-ones who care about themselves, the ones who listen to your advice BUT also advocate for themselves because they understand that it is impossible for them to understand your whole story in the time they spend with you. The ones who are courteous as they would be to any other human. And those are the things I want. Happy National Physician Week. Hope you have the best week ahead.

We have four projects underway being pilot tested in order for best practices to be promote nationally. These projects specifically empower residents to have control over their personal and community life, and #CNAs to grow in their career and nursing home roles. ?? We'll be releasing a microsite later this week with "how to" guides. ?? Strengthening our voice for consensus of solutions. We're continuing to bring together diverse voices to identify solutions (big and small) we can all agree on. ?? This week we'll have three consensus-backed federal policy recommendations to move forward with necessary shifts. ?? Seeking partners as we can't do it alone. ?? We need help funding and scaling other promising projects to: incentivize household models, ensure surveyors have training in person-centered care, and make person-centered care planning a part of nursing home electronic health records. VIDEO. The Hospital of the Future. Every day and night is a learning and self educating one for me. it forces me to think, visualize, and imagine, in addition to becoming highly knowledgeable. I study and follow hospitals around the world. Focusing only on North America, gives me a cognitive bias, so I look at hospitals everywhere. In some parts of the world, notably the Middle East, the Imagined hospital of the future is likely to be low level modular structures that can be changed around, scaled up and scaled down, according to changing requirements.
