“The Future is Already Here, it's Just Not Very Evenly Distributed.” William Gibson

Trying to take a break from the emotional toll of watching Margaret Atwood's dystopian drama The Handmaid's Tail I decided to do something technical for fun this weekend.

The internet was breaking with AI, and ChatGPT chatter, so I figured this would cheer me up for sure, off I went, logged in with my Google Account, and thought, let me try

I typed

A few seconds of anticipation went on and the system started typing back!

I was thinking I should give feedback using those thumbs-up icons but before I got to it other pieces of code started to appear

I was taken aback, looked at the code, and while it looks rudimentary, it also looks correct, I mean it is pretty much a StackOverflow or even AWS documentation sample right there!

Interacting more I asked if I wanted to use STS to log in?

Holy SkyNet! This is pretty cool, I am really curious about how this was built. What type of models and training sets? let me do one last thing!

OK, now I am impressed! Here are my thoughts

  • The system code was OK, but what was impressive is its ability to build the right semantics and the relationships between SQS & Lambda (again really curious about the training for those models)
  • Any limitations around language or cloud systems are meaningless as those will fall one by one I am sure
  • This does open a whole new world of opportunities for CX, imagine the user experience where you no longer need to learn how the system works, what menu items to use, what combinations of keys, etc. Just tell me what you want!

  • This could be an incredible jump forward for software development teams, it could have the same effect as the internet, google search and StackOverFlow had and give us tools to write code that is leaps and bounds more complex than whatever we can create now.
  • I am always careful with assumptions around the impact of new technologies, assumptions that this will end the need for coding are probably as foolish as assumptions that computers will end the papers industry (which they did not) or the News Media (again which they did not) if anything this is probably the dawn of a new era and a new generation of software development tools

I sat down for a bit after this experience, realizing my failure to rest my mind from thinking about a dystopian future, it is too early to drink without being socially stigmatized, so I decided to take my dog out for a walk in the fresh snow covering the GTA this morning.
