?? Imagine a future where cities not only consume less but produce more clean energy! How? By implementing Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). But what exactly is a PED? Find the answer in our MAKING-CITY EU video ? A Positive Energy District (PED) is an eco-friendly urban area that produces more renewable energy than it uses. With sustainable technologies, energy-efficient buildings, smart grids for eco-resilience, community engagement, and reduced carbon footprints, PEDs are revolutionizing urban sustainability, turning cities into energy-positive hubs. Key Benefits of PEDs: ?? Reduced carbon footprint ?? Lower energy bills ??? Improved air quality ??? Enhanced urban liveability Don't miss out on learning how PEDs are reshaping the energy landscapes of cities and how MAKING-CITY EU is applying the concept. What is Carbon-Neutral Urban Development? Carbon-neutral urban development refers to creating cities and communities that reduce their carbon footprint to zero. This means that the total amount of greenhouse gases produced by human activities, like construction, transportation, and energy consumption, is balanced out by removing the equivalent amount from the atmosphere. This can be achieved through renewable energy sources like solar and wind, energy-efficient building practices, sustainable transportation systems, and carbon-offset programs like planting trees or investing in carbon capture technologies. In a carbon-neutral city, buildings are designed with energy efficiency in mind, using materials that reduce embodied carbon and integrating renewable energy systems to power homes and businesses. Transportation systems are reimagined to prioritize electric vehicles, public transportation, and cycling infrastructure. Waste management and water conservation play key roles in reducing emissions as well. At its core, carbon-neutral urban development is a vital step in combating climate change while creating sustainable, livable spaces for future generations. Responding to #Flanders' ambitious 2050 housing targets, ???? the Belgian Pilot is an initiative operating at the district level ??. It aims to scale up energy-efficient housing through a collective approach, focusing on Positive Energy Districts (PED). ?? This approach conducts a preliminary phase to assess neighbourhoods' potential for Positive Energy District conversion. This involves analysing #energy consumption, reducing demand, and maximising local energy generation, alongside tailored renovation advice and district-wide interventions like water basins, lighting, and green spaces. ?? The objective is to collaborate with stakeholders in envisioning #PEDs, selecting projects from municipal climate plans, and sharing experiences through methodology workshops.
