Multiple bidders are vying to become South Korea's fourth mobile operator. The government seized frequencies from the country's existing mobile players, SK Telecom, KT Corp, and LG U+ last year and the year before. The big three had their 28 GHz licenses withdrawn after failing to meet rollout targets. This led the government to pledge to bring in new competition by using the spectrum. Sejong Telecom is one of three bidders, the other two being Stage X and My Mobile Consortium. The operators were required to deploy 15,000 base stations within three years, but they largely ignored the mmWave and channeled their energies into rolling out 5G at 3.5 GHz. The government eventually withdrew the licenses, with SK Telecom being the last to lose the license in May 2023 after managing only 1,650 sites.
