Housing affordability (read: housing that people can afford) rests squarely on all levels of government and is well within their purview to address. Federal- GST, tariffs, mortgage rules Provincial- PST, building code Municipal- Levies, land costs, permit fees, red-tape. It all adds up, and yet the end result is fewer housing starts, a tight rental market, and eroding affordability. The opposite of what is needed, which is more housing. Hearing from RBC next week will help us understand the implications of government as gate-keepers, and will help industry to focus advocacy efforts that will advance changes to policy in support of their stated target: To build MORE homes.
