When it's your job to help people who are on the edge, it's heartbreaking to turn people away. It is our normal to track what % of phone calls we can physically answer. For a long time in the humanitarian space we have been asking people if their community can raise funds to pay someone else for to give them legal advice or if they have jewellery to sell to fund their advice.
We simply do not have the funds to help the people that need helping. And with poverty becoming what now seems like a middle class problem, it's getting worse.
I've seen first hand as Chair of a CLC that we work hard to innovate and create new funding opportunities. We are constantly working with our pro bono and philanthropy partners to support us in new ways. We created a business case for a fee for service model (it didn't stack up for multiple reasons, including undermining for profit partners who support us through pro bono hours and do the work we refer to them where people do have some funds to pay).
We will continue to fight hard to meet the demand for free (or minimal cost) legal support to those in need, but we do need Government to help us meet this ever growing demand.
Everything is crossed for this Federal budget announcement.
Community legal centres help hundreds of thousands of people every year, but our sector is also forced to turn away hundreds of thousands of people a year who need help because we don't have enough resources to assist.
Here's a message from our CEO Tim Leach about what community legal centres need in tomorrow's budget in order to keep giving people and communities the support they rely on.
Watch this space tomorrow evening for an update on what is in the budget for community legal centres.
