Home Depot is returning to one of its most powerful steps in its DEI strategy by requiring all employees, including corporate executives, to work eight-hour retail shifts each quarter. This initiative directly supports the goal of fostering inclusion and equity by ensuring that decision-makers across the organization experience firsthand the challenges and realities faced by frontline employees. By promoting a deeper understanding and empathy for their diverse workforce, Home Depot is bridging gaps between corporate and store employees, creating a more inclusive work environment where all voices are valued. This strategy not only enhances employee relations but also improves leadership decision-making. Corporate employees gain critical insights into customer interactions and operational hurdles, allowing them to make better, more informed decisions. As a result, Home Depot is not only becoming a more inclusive employer but also improving its business performance—linking DEI efforts directly to positive outcomes for its bottom line. #DEI #InclusiveLeadership #WorkplaceEquity #CorporateCulture #HomeDepot #EmpathyInAction #BusinessStrategy

How do you reduce turnover? Engage with potential employees from the very beginning on what to expect.
“You get people interested in the industry, that’s only halfway there. If everyone’s still leaving before 60 or 90 days, you’re just churning and you’re not getting anywhere. And what I’ve found, and what we’ve found lately particularly, is for the most part, it comes down to if it’s not a bad manager, it comes down to the job isn’t what they thought it was. You think most of them are shoppers and they get a feel for it, but when you get thrown in the fire, I think you realize what it really is. So I think part of that is having some form of realistic job preview before you even hire them so they kind of understand the tasks they’re going to be expected to do,”says Joe Sheetz, Executive Vice Chairman, Sheetz, Inc. in the newest CLVG report “Making the Convenience Industry an Employer of Choice,” based on the latest Coca-Cola Retailing Research Council study. Read “The Views” for CLVG members’ thought-provoking discussion on the convenience retailing industry's journey to become an employer of choice. Explore insights from our European Partner, Kurt Stuhllemmer, in an enlightening conversation with ESM - European Supermarket Magazine. Delve into the evolving landscape of consumer values, where the treatment of retail staff emerges as a pivotal metric. Discover why prioritizing employee well-being is becoming integral to consumer perception. Hall & Partners' 2023 #ValueShift study, which researched 2,000 UK consumers about their attitudes to brands, revealed that the way that retailers treat their employees is foremost in the minds of consumers, particularly as they continue to adopt a discretionary lens for everyday purchases in the face of a continued high cost of living. Tipping has become a hot topic in the U.S., with Americans now tipping in more places than ever before. While restaurants, bars, and hairdressers remain the top spots for tipping, we’re increasingly seeing tip jars at coffee shops, takeout counters, and even self-checkout kiosks. According to The New York Times, this shift was driven by the pandemic, as businesses looked to retain more workers and boost their pay. Is this data in line with how you tip? Where do you feel tipping is most expected for you, and where has it surprised you the most? Comment on how tipping culture is evolving and what you are seeing! #CustomerExperience #ServiceIndustry

Beware the Doom & Gloom Merchants - that tell us #EmployeeEngagement is at 20%.. ..and by extension, the entire system of work is on the verge of collapse. Now we know that most workplaces have plenty to improve upon, and there are inherent, systemic issues that affect work as we currently know it. But figures of around 20% engagement are based on a flawed method for interpreting scaled responses, and massively overstate the issues. And they get traction. A lot of it. Our figure (admittedly from a smaller pool)? 73% (and that's up slightly on 2023) So how are they so radically different? Well, both The People Experience Hub and the Doom & Gloom Merchants use a five point scale... ...but the difference is in interpretation. We treat each point on the scale as equal, and each side of the scale as equally positive or negative. In other words, 'disagree' (4) is one step away from neutral (3) and so is 'agree' (2). So if we have an equal number of both, the net effect is taken as neutral. Another way of looking at it, is that if everyone agreed with the engagement questions, it would produce a score of 75% We don't categorise people as engaged or not ('cos that kind of implies they're the problem), but a score of 73% suggests that people are reasonable engaged on the whole. Fair? Well, then what if I tell you that the Doom & Gloom Merchants only categorise you as 'engaged' if you average at least 4.5 (between agree and strongly agree) for their engagement questions...??? If you score 3.5 to 4.4 you are not engaged ?? And if you score less than 3.5 you are actively disengaged ?? If you ask me, that's bonkers. Loaded or what? I'm not saying the world of work is a bed of roses... And you might say that the bar should be really high before we say someone is engaged... ..but if so, let's stop measuring it, because by that definition it's a holy grail. And - when someone tells you that the UK has an employee engagement problem, please just check where the evidence is coming from and HOW they've reached that conclusion! *The Doom & Gloom Merchants may or may not also rhyme with ballop ?? #peopleanalytics Jordan Luigi Ted
