"Look aunty! A real fire engine truck!!!" This weekend, my team organized a trip to the fire station for a bunch of 6-year olds! It is one of the activities in our year-long collaboration with the volunteer organization that Operations have adopted. ** We were supposed to be the children’s minders, but it didn’t take very long before the firefighters brought out the 6-year olds in all of us. The incessant “oh”, “wow”, while savoring the touch of a real fire engine truck is almost a dream come true for many of us who grew up with the Lego-modeled ones. Seizing the opportunity, I chatted with the firefighters who are normally too busy to pay me any attention. It goes like this: What keeps you going in a job like this?? Purpose, passion, pride. How do you make it from bed to truck in under one minute at the sound of the alarm? Practice, practice, practice. Repeat. How do you remain in top form like to be able to climb 12-storeys non-stop in 3 minutes with 20kg on your back?? We train, we train, and we train. We never stop training. Do you ever feel like quitting?? Yes, there were moments… then we remind ourselves why we signed up for this in the first place. How do you know you are getting better at what you do? We know with certainty as there is no lack of resources to help us get better - new equipment, new technology, new practices – how can we not get better unless we refuse to? And lastly: are you afraid? Of course we are. Who can be not afraid, staring danger in its face, engulfed by it? But we have a mission to accomplish, and we know our team is protecting one another and our buddies are watching out for us. We know as a team, we got this. Amidst a backdrop of blaring sirens, I left the station with a newfound respect for our firefighters and emergency rescuers. Such a noble calling. Didn’t they say not all heroes wear capes? ** (The children come from lower income families, and one of the programme’s objectives is to ensure that these children, in their developmental years, no matter what their circumstances are, have access to opportunities for social-emotional learning and educational support so that they can succeed in life.)

The new generation of firemen. As it is widely discussed, the new generation of firefighters entering firehouses for their first shift are different. They have spent more time in classrooms than working hard labor; more time in front of screens than swinging a hammer. Since the beginning of firefighting, it has been taken for granted that when you got a rookie they would understand basic mechanics, plumbing, building construction, and tool use. Gone are those days. So, what will you do about it? Will you laugh when they can’t start a saw? Will you poke fun when they don’t know how to check if a breaker is tripped or hook a trailer to a truck? If you do, you will find yourself in the majority with today’s fire service. We get it, you didn’t sign up to be a life coach. You did, however, sign up to be a mentor and teach the craft to those coming in below you. Take the five minutes that someone else didn’t to show them HOW and explain WHY! Every action done from shift start to shift end contributes to the mission, so treat every action as such. Don’t be above showing them how to load the dishwasher, or run a drill. If you’re getting frustrated that they aren’t volunteering to do something, realize that they’re probably just too nervous to ask. They didn’t ask to not be taught. Fostering simple skills in and around the firehouse will set the score for the next decade in the fire service. “Failure isn’t fatal, but failure to change might be” – John Wooden

Easter is a time of renewal and of fresh starts. A new leaf turned, and rejuvenation. So many people caught up in the Criminal Justice System end up in a spiral of reoffending, largely because the necessary structures and support to help them make real change are not in place. It is extremely hard to make a fresh start when so many doors are closed to you, when support networks don’t exist and gaining employment is so difficult. Helping people to take their life in a new direction is exactly what Trailblazers Mentoring is all about. Working with people at the end of their prison sentences and ‘through the gates’ back into the community with a mixture of 1:1 mentorship and practical support drastically reduces rates of reoffending. The impact of Trailblazers’ efforts speaks volumes: whilst the national rate of reoffending is 38%, Trailblazers intervention reduces that rate to 9%. As the media continues to show images online please have a conversation with your children that if they feel sad or disturbed by images they see or words they hear that they can come and talk to you. Some helpful ways to discuss this may be ????Ask open-ended questions to gage their understanding and feelings about the event. ????Provide simple, age-appropriate explanations about what happened ????Reassure them of their safety and remind them of the safety measures in place at home, school, and in their community. ????Encourage open dialogue and let them know they can always come to you with questions or concerns. ????Limit exposure to graphic images or details by monitoring their media consumption. ????Focus on the helpers and authorities who respond in emergencies, highlighting the positive actions taken to keep people safe. ????Empower them with knowledge about how to seek help if they feel scared or unsafe, such as talking to a trusted adult or calling emergency services. ????Encourage empathy and kindness towards others who may be affected by the event, reinforcing the importance of supporting one another in difficult times

While many perceive summer camps as spaces where campers learn and enjoy themselves, with counselors merely providing assistance, the reality often reveals a different dynamic. In numerous instances, it's the camp counselors who emerge from the experience having gained profound insights into seeing people and embracing differences, often learning more than the campers themselves. In "Failing to See What They See," Christian Long recounts his transformative experience as a camp counselor at Camp Capella for a boy named Uriah, whose physical and neurological challenges made everyday activities difficult. Uriah found freedom and joy in swimming at Phillips Lake, where his limitations vanished, transforming him into a graceful, boundless being.
