In the aftermath of October 7, Jewish educators in the Diaspora have been working hard to bridge the gap for our students so that they can understand what’s happening in Israel and what Israeli society is going through. It’s been an unprecedented time in modern Jewish history, and these are unchartered waters for so many of us. Check out my latest piece in the Prizmah blog about how to navigate our post Oct. 7 world using Israeli music:?

???? Exploring the Socio-Cultural Dynamics of Chamar Pop in Punjab ???? As we dive deeper into the diverse world of regional music, Chamar Pop stands out not just for its vibrant rhythms but for its profound socio-political implications. Originating from the heart of Punjab’s Dalit community, Chamar Pop is more than a musical genre—it’s a bold expression of cultural identity and resistance. This emerging genre provides a rich canvas for academic exploration, particularly for those interested in the intersections of music, caste, and social change. Chamar Pop offers insights into how art can influence societal structures, challenge longstanding norms, and empower marginalized communities. I’m proposing a comprehensive research project to delve into how Chamar Pop has contributed to the socio-political discourse in Punjab, examining its impact on caste dynamics, cultural identity, and the broader music industry. This study aims to highlight the role of music as a form of social activism and its potential to drive substantial cultural transformation. ?? I invite scholars, students, and music enthusiasts to join in this exploration. Whether through collaborative research, academic discussions, or just a simple share of this post, your support can help spotlight the significance of Chamar Pop and its role in shaping the narrative of contemporary Punjab. #MusicResearch #ChamarPop #SocioPoliticalChange #AcademicCollaboration #CulturalStudies #opportunities

Sounding Together: Collaborative Perspectives on U.S. Music in the 21st Century - OA PDF: https://lnkd.in/gWbmASwq Sounding Together: Collaborative Perspectives on U.S. Music in the Twenty-21st Century?is a multi-authored, collaboratively conceived book of essays that tackles key challenges facing scholars studying music of the United States in the early twenty-first century. This book encourages scholars in music circles and beyond to explore the intersections between social responsibility, community engagement, and academic practices through the simple act of working together. The book’s essays—written by a diverse and cross-generational group of scholars, performers, and practitioners—demonstrate how collaboration can harness complementary skills and nourish comparative boundary-crossing through interdisciplinary research. The chapters of the volume address issues of race, nationalism, mobility, cultural domination, and identity; as well as the crisis of the Trump era and the political power of music. Each contribution to the volume is written collaboratively by two scholars, bringing together contributors who represent a mix of career stages and positions. Through the practice of and reflection on collaboration,?Sounding Together?breaks out of long-established paradigms of solitude in humanities scholarship and works toward social justice in the study of music. #SociologyofMusic #Music #MusicalCollaboration #AmericanMusicScene #PopMusic #FolkMusic #RockNRoll #Identity #Nationalism #mobiity #Race #class

Appreciating a diversity of cultures is nice, but… It does not lead to higher expectations and access to rigorous learning for all learners, especially those who are marginalized by society and our schools. Developing cultural proficiency helps you see ways in which you can shift your mindsets and organizations in order to ensure all your music students have equitable access to success in your music program. Cultural proficiency is not about diversity, but it does allow us greater ability to navigate differences. In this chapter 3 of my book, “Music As a Vehicle: A Practical Guide to Implementing Culturally Responsive Teaching in Today’s Music Classrooms”, you will: ??Understand what cultural proficiency is ??Explore the tools for cultural proficiency ??Identify various behaviors and music education practices in relation to the continuum of cultural proficiency Order your copy today at www.MusicAsAVehicle.com! #MusicAsAVehicle

Looking forward to our forthcoming LJMU APSS Research & Knowledge Exchange Annual Conference, when I'll co-present a paper with VC Scholarship Doctoral Candidate Finlay Gordon, which is based on our research on Liverpool Cathedral's music programme. Title: Traditions in Transition: The Value of Cathedral Choristership in the 21st Century Abstract In the changing cultural landscape of the 21st century, as Romantic ideals of “high” culture are gradually being eroded, the preservation of the #tradition of #cathedral #choristership stands as a powerful testament to cultural continuity. Despite the enduring nature of this tradition, cathedrals and their #choirs have also modernised significantly, welcoming girl and ethnically diverse choristers, opening up music repertoire, and introducing more modern styles of #worship. The shifting landscape of the #chorister tradition in Britain reflects broader societal changes, particularly within the framework of #neoliberalculture. In this new milieu, where #culturalcapital is no longer solely defined by adherence to "high art" musical repertoire, the traditional role and identity of choristers within cathedrals undergo significant reevaluation. This paper seeks to evaluate the challenges and opportunities of the continuation of the chorister tradition in the 21st century, which builds upon a corpus of work on the social value of Liverpool Cathedral's music outreach programme, and a postmodern analytical framework surrounding the notion of cultural capital in neoliberal culture. This tradition in transition poses both challenges and opportunities. One challenge lies in reconciling the traditional prestige associated with cathedral choristership with evolving cultural and societal expectations. As notions of #identity and #belonging within cathedrals are being redefined, questions arise regarding #inclusivity, #diversity and #accessibility. This is the focus of the first part of the paper, which asks questions on how Liverpool Cathedral seeks to maintain its historical significance, while embracing a more inclusive and diverse cohort of choristers representative of contemporary society. The second part of the paper will consider the shifting nature of the chorister tradition in neoliberal culture, which also brings #economic considerations into the equation. How can chorister programmes sustain themselves financially in an era where funding for the arts is increasingly precarious? This necessitates innovative approaches to #funding, collaboration with external stakeholders, and potentially reimagining the role of choristers within the broader cultural landscape. By examining these themes, this paper aims to provide insights into the significance of cathedral choristership in the 21st century and its implications for the future of British #musicalheritage. It will contribute to ongoing discussions surrounding cultural continuity, diversity and the evolving role of tradition in contemporary society.

Looking to cultivate a vibrant songwriting scene in your own community? Inspired by Chicago's successful songwriting showcases, here are actionable steps to ignite a creative revolution in your area: Create Inclusive Spaces: Set up welcoming venues such as cafes, art galleries, or community centers where artists can mingle and share their original work. Foster Community Collaboration: Encourage songwriters to come together through circles and workshops to refine their craft and support each other. Curate Special Events: Organize unique events like a "Song of the Month Club" to motivate artists to produce new work and engage the community regularly. Emphasize Listening: Promote events as special listening opportunities to attract an attentive audience that values the music. Utilize Local Talent: Feature local musicians to draw in crowds and build a community-centered brand. Encourage Artistic Growth: Provide feedback sessions and mentorship opportunities to help songwriters improve and innovate. Promote Broadly: Use all available channels—social media, local radio, and community partnerships—to spread the word effectively. Measure Impact and Adapt: Continuously seek feedback and be willing to adjust your approach to meet the community’s evolving needs.
The Venue in downtown Aurora is an important place for Chicagoland musicians. "In recent years, venues from Hammond to Highland Park, Berwyn to Aurora, have presented special curated listening nights for both established and emerging songwriters to present new work in collaborative settings."
