"Without patients, there are no new clinical studies. Without new clinical studies, there are no new drugs. And without new drugs, we can't bridge the gap with health disparities that we have in our community."?—Esmel Meeks, Director of Sight Forever, Marketing and Communications, Wagner Kapoor Institute This video -?Why Advancing Inclusive Research Matters in Ophthalmology Studies, explains the importance of inclusive research.?Diverse representation in clinical research is essential to examine how investigational medicines may improve our understanding of science. Patients, physicians, researchers, and community education experts at Wagner Kapoor Institute in Virginia, Charles Retina Institute in Tennessee, and Retina Consultants of Texas collaborated with the Genentech Advancing Inclusive Research Site Alliance and the Bravo Group to create this educational video.?Stay connected and explore other insightful videos created by @Genentech with inputs from healthcare professionals and patients within our Advancing Inclusive Research Site Alliance and others. https://lnkd.in/gkmHhq5u #InclusiveResearch, #ClinicalResearch, #Bias, #Patients, #Ophthalmology, #DiversePopulations

We are excited to announce the beginning of the REVAMP study — a first-in-human, FDA-authorized study of Gastric Mucosal Ablation (GMA) for weight recurrence after Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG). This study will assess the novel weight loss treatment GMA for patients who’ve had a previous vertical sleeve gastrectomy and have experienced weight regain. REVAMP builds upon our previous studies using the ablation technique, exploring its potential as a revisional treatment tool after traditional bariatric surgery. Although effective, many patients experience a significant amount of weight regain following the sleeve gastrectomy. The aim of this procedure is to reduce the size of the sleeve using GMA to improve fullness, portion control, and weight. Most importantly, this revisional ablation procedure will be incisionless and performed endoscopically, minimizing many of the risks associated with traditional bariatric surgeries like the sleeve gastrectomy. The study will be conducted at True You Weight Loss in Cary, North Carolina, and is now enrolling patients. I`m happy to share our most recent publication which I could gladly contribute as a coauthor with my colleagues Paul Hegarty, Yuta Nakanishi, and the Fowler Kennedy team coordinated by Alan Getgood. The goal was to prove that the modified Lemaire does not impact the patellofemoral cartilage volume after 2 years of follow-up of those who got an #ACLR +/- the modified Lemaire #LET. Some authors are concerned that closing the created #ITB interval can lead to some degree of overconstrain of the lateral Patellofemoral joint in patients who underwent Modified Lemaire LET. Therefore, we performed a cartilage volume quantification including 92 patients included in the Stability I Randomized Clinical Trial. Our study found no relevant cartilage volume loss on the lateral side of the Patellofemoral joint of the included population. Thus, our study suggests that the modified Lemaire does not affect #Cartilage health in this clinical and surgical scenario. It may not be applicable for those who already have some degree of cartilage changes on their #PFJ by the time they get a primary or revision ACLR. Study performed at the Fowler Kennedy, Western University during my 3 years of combined research and clinical fellowship training. I hope that it can influence your practice and improve your patients clinical outcomes. https://lnkd.in/dkfwgYxZ

Proud to share that our video on ‘Keyframes for Optimized Splenic Flexure Mobilization by Three Surgical Approaches’ has been published in Colorectal Disease journal! This work underscores the importance of safe, structured surgical training—especially in challenging procedures like splenic flexure mobilization, one of the more difficult steps for colorectal surgery trainees to master. By breaking down this complex mobilization into keyframes, we aim to create a reproducible and standardized approach that trainees can rely on to develop confidence and precision. Structured training not only improves patient safety but also equips the next generation of surgeons with the skills needed for complex anatomical challenges. A special thank you to my mentor, Mr. Arshad Malik, for his invaluable guidance and support, and to Dr Urooj Malik for her valuable contributions. Grateful as well to Colorectal Disease for recognizing the importance of this work. July 19 holds significant milestones in medical history. Notable events include the 1799 discovery of the Rosetta Stone, which contributed to medical translations; the first successful brain surgery by Sir Henry Marsh in 1843; the birth of Albert Sabin in 1898, who developed the polio vaccine; Rosalyn Yalow's birth in 1921, a Nobel Prize co-winner who discovered radioimmunoassay technique; the first 3D reconstruction of a human organ using CT in 1983; the successful cloning of human stem cells in 2013, offering advances in regenerative medicine; and the use of CRISPR-Cas9 to correct a disease-causing mutation in viable human embryos in 2017.
