Before community colleges can promote careers or win parents over, they need to ensure their programs are preparing students for the job market and offering them sufficient opportunities to succeed. This doesn’t just mean reviewing the curriculum and credit requirements to ensure they are up to professional standards—it also. means creating a throughline for students from the courses to employment These include: ? * Guided Pathways, an initiative designed by the American Association of Colleges and Universities with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Ascendium Education Group designed to reduce confusion among students about what courses will contribute toward their educational goals, improving their course completion rate and qualitatively improving their employment opportunities. ? * On-the-Job training with local employers, including internships and apprenticeship opportunities. Employers benefit from having input into the program development so that it will match the training requirements they need and from having a more reliable recruitment pipeline. ?https://lnkd.in/gSSnSJV9 * Career Fairs to help students meet local employers. These can also be places for prospective students to learn more about potential careers, where they can ask questions about what the jobs are like, work/life balance, income expectations, and opportunities for growth. Are you looking for meaningful ways to support youth development and mentorship? Here are some ideas of activities you can engage in with students: 1?? Arrange a virtual or in-person job shadow so students can gain firsthand exposure to the day-to-day responsibilities and realities of your career. 2?? Offer constructive feedback and guidance on student projects or assignments related to their career interests, helping them refine their skills and ideas. 3?? Host a webinar for students tailored to your specific industry. In addition to discussing skills within your career, share skills universal to any industry, such as time management, professional etiquette, and networking strategies. 4?? Conduct mock interviews with students, simulating real-world interview scenarios and providing valuable feedback on their performance, communication skills, and confidence. 5?? Facilitate an internship or apprenticeship opportunity on-site or virtually to give students the chance to gain hands-on experience and mentorship in their chosen field. 6?? Coordinate or participate in career fairs or expos. If you would like to host any of these experiences for students, comment down below so we can help you get started!

Top Tips for New College Students: 1. Get to know your TAs - A lot of TAs are twice as likely to help you with things you are struggling with if you take the time to get to know them 2. Really the syllabus in its entirety for every class - a lot of syllabi will include important information about policies and deadlines that professors may not necessarily announce at the start of the semester 3. Befriend an upperclassman - people who have been there longer know more than you and it is always good to have someone more experienced to get advice from when you run into a tricky situation (you definitely will) 4. Go to the review sessions when they are offered - they exist for a reason, there will always be concepts most people struggle with more than others, and the more prepared you are for the exams, the better you will do 5. Like with the TAs, introduce yourself to your professors - professors are more likely to grant extensions or offer extra help to people who they are familiar with in person rather than just another student on the roster 6. Go to the career fair - yes it is overwhelming but they are the #1 way to get internships and make connections while in college 7. No all-nighters, no days without food - not providing your body with basic needs is a good way to burn yourself out quickly and perform poorly on exams, get some sleep instead of cramming, you will need it

Some tips and guidance for employers on how to recruit young talent into your team. Start early, don't wait until you are ready to recruit. Start now. Engage with education settings, Schools, colleges and universities. How are they going to know that you exist if they cannot see you? Local career fairs, work experience, engagement activities in schools, T-Level placements, and much more are available to you. Make your vacancies suitable for those currently in education. Advertise for longer and indicate start dates after the academic year. Most students are looking to secure their destination 9 - 6 months ahead of leaving school/college. An Ideal vacancy for a student would be advertised in November with a closing date of late February/early March. With a start date of September. Make the vacancy attractive to a student. Show them that they will be supported by knowledgeable staff who will support and guide them to become the best that they can be. Promote the career prospects beyond the apprenticeship. - A recent apprenticeship vacancy intro "We are looking for a digital marketing apprentice to join the delivery of our boutique specialist management offering at 'Company'. This role be primarily based from our 'Trumpton' office." This example communicates nothing about the role or the type of candidates they want to hear from. We see too many students neglect this... Differentiating yourself outside of your academics, because good grades can only get you so far when it comes time to look for a job. The truth is in today's world, grades alone aren't going to be enough to set you apart in the job market. Besides, it's no secret that the traditional education system still needs work to accommodate neurodivergent thinking and ways of learning. So if you're a student who's struggling to get good grades, you're better off differentiating yourself and bulking up your resume in these ways: - Practical experience: Seek out internships, apprenticeships, part-time jobs and volunteer work as a student to gain. Life is lived in the real world and there's only so much that books and theory can teach you. - Technical skills: Look up some of the in-demand skills in your desired industry, and go above and beyond to learn them. The best candidates are the ones that never stop learning. - Professional network: Career fairs, workshops and seminars, and networking events can help you build out a strong network of industry professionals. Seek as much knowledge as possible and absorb as much as you can. - Personal branding: Create a personal brand to strategically position yourself as a knowledgeable and competent candidate to potential employers. The earlier you start, the better. #careerdevelopment #recruitment #peopleandculture

Great tips here for our future leaders!
HR Coordinator @ MetaPhy Health \\ I Empower Emerging Talent to Obtain their Dream Job through Career Development \\ MT|SHRM College Relations Team \\ UTK & MTSU Alumni
Less than 10% of the interview will be discussing your degree. Start building your other 90% by: Joining Student Organizations -> Aim for quality over Quantity -> Aspire for leadership roles Attending Professional Conferences -> So many associations offer HUGE discounts to students -> Network with professionals in your field -> Play the “student card” (I met so many people this way)! Landing Internships -> Plan to attend job fairs -> Engage with your university’s career center Volunteering? -> Many non-profits love student volunteers -> These can build strong narratives for future interviews Exploring relevant certifications/student programs you can in -> Lots of industry associations offer unique programs for students -> Jumpstart your skill set by obtaining a certification early (if you qualify) Stop relying on your college degree to get you a job. Your college degree is simply a small chapter in your career story. P.S.: What other activities should students engage in?? Let me know in the comments! Repost to help students in your network
