This week, our teams from Australia and the US will join our Philippines team in Manila for an exciting team-building event. We'll bond, have some fun, and make our work environment even better. Rumor has it there's tequila and a karaoke night planned, so wish me luck! ???? It's so important for businesses and leaders to see the value in these team days. I've always emphasized the value of team get-togethers away from the daily grind of office work. It's helped build some really strong and successful teams because it: ? **Boosts Morale and Engagement:** Team-building activities can increase employee engagement by up to 50%. Engaged employees are more productive and committed to their work. ?? **Fosters Collaboration:** Fun and bonding moments help break down barriers and encourage collaboration. Teams that engage in bonding activities show a 20% increase in productivity. ?? **Reduces Stress:** Team-building exercises reduce workplace stress by creating a more relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Employees in low-stress environments are 25% more productive. Obviously, it’s a lot harder to do with virtual teams, and it’s the new normal that I am currently navigating. Here are some ideas on how we are working to achieve this with our large remote team: ?? **Virtual Team-Building Activities:** Hosting virtual games, trivia, or talent shows. It’s pretty funny to see everyone in the business dressed up in Halloween or 80’s attire! ? **Regular Check-ins:** Schedule regular video calls that aren’t work-related. Virtual coffee breaks or happy hours can keep remote teams connected on a personal level and discover more about each other. I love seeing the casual pet drop-in too. ?? **Recognition and Celebrations:** Celebrating achievements and recognising hard work through virtual shout-outs, awards, or small tokens of appreciation. I've always been a big advocate for this, and at times, to a fault! There’s nothing more rewarding than feeling appreciated and noticed for a job well done. I appreciate working for a company that really fosters team morale and knows the importance of the impact of team culture on overall organisational success. So with this in mind, I’m pretty excited that after a few rounds of karaoke (hopefully a few less of tequila) we might all come back guns blazing, ready to take on the market. I had a good discussion with Sean Plunket on The Platform yesterday morning about the evolving nature of flexible working off the back of another interview I recently did with The Post. The main focus was on the differences between flexible and chrono working, and whether they're here to stay... Chrono working has been making headlines recently and is expected to become the next major employment trend in New Zealand. The concept revolves around aligning your work schedule with your body clock, rather than sticking to the traditional 9 to 5. Flexible working, including hybrid and fully remote setups, has gained popularity since the Covid pandemic. And we’re definitely seeing the impact of this in Wellington city with the number of cafes and restaurants closing their doors and the lack of traffic – particularly on a Monday and Friday! In May, Robert Walters asked 2,000 employees to determine their preferred flexible work policies for their companies to pilot. The top three choices were: ·????????four-day week (43%) ·????????fully remote work (24%) ·????????the ability to work from anywhere in the world (23%) Additionally, 42% believed chrono working would improve their mental health, and 11% were interested in experimenting with the concept. While some large employers in Australia, such as Amazon, Apple, Tabcorp, and the NSW Government, are asking their staff to return to the office five days a week, it's important to note that workplace culture and flexible working arrangements are key factors for candidates when considering job offers. Personally, I believe the nature of the job influences the feasibility of remote work. Nevertheless, the traditional 9-5 Monday-Friday schedule is no longer the norm in many workplaces.
