At Accountfully we are big on our swag. It has visited countries from Canada to Morocco to France and more. It's kept beer cold at famous stadiums, witnessed historical sites, entertainment hubs and most likely travelled to at least 40 of the 50 states (I'm guesstimating here, don't quote me on these stats). Taking pictures and sharing these summer adventures became so popular, we dubbed them Accountfully Adventures (#accountfullyadventures), not to be confused with Accountfully Life (#accountfullylife), which encompasses our daily work vibes and behind the scenes views into our culture. A few years ago we started to hold a competition every August to vote on our favorite Adventure photo. It truly elevated our internal shares of these vacations and trips. We take the vote to social media and internally through a form. It's a great way to send off the summer in style. As we near the end of the month, I'm excited to see where our swag is captured and bask in the creativity our team of accountants have. They may be numbers champions by day, but they are also super talented photographers and art directors of our swag in their off time. This event and taking swag on a vacay is 100% optional, of course, but it's nice to see how our team enjoys using their swag on their days off without that "pit-of-the-stomach" feeling when seeing items associated with work. Going a bit deeper, this adventures contest is a representation of our culture being open and receptive to taking time off and enjoying life. Attend stand-ups. Every stand-up is an opportunity. An opportunity to listen and learn: - to better understand tech infrastructure and initiatives - to learn how the team is progressing - to make sure you’re aware of complexities in dev work as well as QA work - to see if any questions come up (and give/find answers) - to learn if someone is blocked (and help unblock) - to understand considerations and findings in QA that be easy to miss from the Jira comments filling your inbox An opportunity to get help: - ask about whether a new scenario adds scope and needs a ticket (and grooming, etc) - to understand the complexity of how data will be funneled for a pilot (and whether a spike is needed) - to see if the UI for feature A will be ready by sprint 9.2 so analytics can pick instrumentation for Adobe shortly after - to understand the feasibility of an A/B test - to ask about an internal user’s unexpected experience and whether the spike ticket can be taken up in this sprint An opportunity to share: - to share the input from a driving team (which we are collaborating with) whether a certain use case is small enough to be left out of the MVP or should be considered in the first launch - to share the rationale for why a pilot may be needed for Feature B launch - to share user research, business input, design feedback, and upcoming considerations Thank you Kartika Tangirala , Anusha Gannamaneni , Venkate, Shashi, Paras (all of whom I’ll tag properly soon) for giving me the opportunity to join and participate in our team’s stand-ups. I find them invaluable. <3 — There is a parallel between stand-ups at work and dinner at home. Just like I believe stand-ups ate important - so too, dinners are important. Today’s dinner was an opportunity: one to share a challenge. Today I challenged my 7 year old, Ethan, to try some spinach with his home-made taco bowl. Turns out that he liked his new spinach-enhanced taco bowl so much that it is not only better than Taco Bell, it’s also better than ice cream and chocolate. A literal 10 out of 10. So, don’t forget: Attend stand-ups. Attend dinners. Much love for you on your career journey.

Take pride in your employees and they will take pride in you. I see a lot of companies handing out swag to customers, but refusing it to employees. I believe giving swag to employees is much more beneficial to the company than giving it to customers. What do you think? An employee wanting to wear a hat or t-shirt when off the clock shows pride in the company they work for. It also can make the employee feel the company takes pride in them. Also, in most instances that an employee is denied swag the supervisors all receive it, and that tells the employee they are less important than everyone they see wearing it.

Celebrating 1,000 days at Nous ?? This morning I was reminded that today is my 1,000th day working at Nous. My first reaction? Woaah that’s a lot of time spent staring at one laptop. And I’m slightly concerned about how many cups of tea that adds up to. But… I’ve also been thinking about everything that’s happened since I joined. And I realised it’s pretty damn impressive what we’ve accomplished so far! So in honour of my Nous millennium (what do you mean that’s not a thing??), here are a few things I’ve learned: ? If you ask Lydia to be in a TikTok video it will go viral 99% of the time ? Sending a customer a hand-written thank you note is totally worth the effort ? Energy, mobile and broadband providers use some real crafty comms to get us all to pay more ? Unintentionally enormous oven gloves make great company merch ? It’s not the end of the world if you accidentally email every customer saying “Hi Paul” ? Nothing will ever make me sweat more than pressing “send newsletter” to our biggest email list ? Going a little bit viral does (annoyingly) give you a great dopamine hit ? Banging a gong to celebrate wins in the team, no matter how big or small, will genuinely make everyone smile ? Someone will always laugh at your puns (even the really, really terrible ones) ? 9 out of 10 people really are overpaying on their bills ? There will always be someone on Facebook who says your product sucks ? It’s impossible to leave work on a Friday without saying ‘what a week’ ? Working with people you can genuinely call your friends is the absolute best The one thing I’m yet to learn..? How to use our coffee machine. That thing still scares the crap out of me.

Today was my 2 year anniversary with GoodParty.org. Beyond that, August holds a special place for me, professionally. It marks 19 years since I landed my first paid organizing gig at the ripe old age of 19. This month, I officially cross the threshold of having spent half my life doing campaign/impact work. I have had many successes and made even more mistakes along the way. If you'll indulge a grizzled young campaign vet, here are three most important things I've learned for those in it for the long haul: 1. People are good.?Believing in their potential drives change. We all want the same things, even if we struggle to agree on the path. 2. There are no permanent setbacks.?In movements, every loss is a step closer to victory. 3. Anger is cheap fuel.?It burns hot and fast, but to last in this work, you must find a way to center joy.
