October, What a month- a reflective, complicated month full of letting go, making decisions and having immense agency over my own self. I travelled back to where I worked before the Guildhall for the first time in 5 years. I went into the bar and sat down, ordered a glass of their most expensive bubbly and just soaked in the atmosphere. I really was heartbroken to leave my job but my manager at the time had taken great offence to me taking maternity leave and it had all been very toxic when I returned so I knew it was right to leave, and I did. It broke my heart, but I’m better for it - here’s what I learnt: 1) Celebrate your colleagues, lift them up, whisper encouragements to them for every triumph and commiserate with them (just a little) when they fail. 2) Woman should be celebrated when they are brave- so when we recently said goodbye to a member of Little Exeter, we celebrated it with her, and gave her a “bravery” bonus to help ease the burden as she eased into a new job. We clapped her out as she left and we promised to stay in touch. 3) Firm but fair means realistic expectations mixed with empathy- and it’s a beautiful combo And finally: 4) Let go of what is no longer serving you. If it’s shame, let it go. If it’s worry- let that go too. I refuse to worry unless someone’s paying me to worry- make a plan, do it. I feel empowered, I feel ownership of my path in life whatever that will be and most importantly- I feel at peace. #trauma #work #lettinggo
