Strauss was the President of Macy's and it was the roaring 20’s. ?????????? ???????? ????????. They had just expanded their anchor store to an entire city block, over one million square feet. Such growth meant a lot of hiring and the majority of these hires were immigrants from Europe. Loving the sentiment of the #Thanksgiving holiday, these newcomers had embraced their new home and wanted to show pride in their new heritage. ???????? ???????????? ?? ????????????. Mr. Strauss was all ears. It turns out that Gimbels, a rival of sorts, was already hosting a parade in Philadelphia. Could Macy’s borrow that idea? Could Macy’s best that idea? Why not? How about allowing the employees to march in the parade? Perhaps borrow some animals from the Central Park Zoo? In fact, what about welcoming #SantaClaus at the end of the parade in Herald Square? That first parade was attended by over ??????,?????? ???????????? that saw floats of Mother Goose and Little Red Riding Hood. Those employees? They dressed as clowns, cowboys and knights while bears, elephants and monkeys joined in the procession that included four marching bands. Listen. Borrow. Experiment. #Innovate. ?In the colorful town of Paintsville, siblings Matt, Clef, and Note owned “Palette Pals,” a store famous for selling every paint color imaginable. Matt was a fan of bold, vibrant colors, while Clef and Note preferred soft, pastel shades. ? One day, they decided to paint the store’s exterior to attract more customers. Matt suggested, “Let’s go with ‘Electric Blue!’ It’ll be like a bolt of lightning!” Clef and Note wrinkled their noses. “Too loud. How about ‘Tranquil Peach?’ It’s welcoming and calm.” They couldn’t agree, so Matt had an idea. “Let’s each paint one side of the store in our chosen color. Then we’ll ask for opinions.” Clef and Note agreed, and they set to work. The following day, half the store was ‘Electric Blue,’ and the other half ‘Tranquil Peach.’ ? The contrasting colors amused and?intrigued customers. They started giving opinions, which turned into lively debates about color psychology. Ultimately, the siblings realized that combining their styles made “Palette Pals” special. They decided to keep both colors, and the store became known as the “Duality Destination.” ? Matt, Clef, and Note applied three rules for the development of a family business: 1. Involving neutral third parties, like business consultants or mentors 2. Separation of roles, defining clear roles and responsibilities 3. Succession and structural planning, having a clear and agreed-upon plan And they created their duality destination. ? I started my career in 1978 with Cedar Point and retired (or so I thought) in 2018 when the company was known as Cedar Fair. Prior to what will occur tomorrow when Cedar Fair merges with Six Flags, the single most memorable day within Cedar Fair's history was 18 years ago today (June 30, 2006) when we acquired the five Paramount Parks. As Phil Bender and I entered the park that day, we discussed how the company would never be the same from that day on. We had gone from an organization that the General Managers "owned" their parks and made the majority of day-to-day decisions on how the park would be operated. Now, with 11 parks in the company's portfolio, we would be corporately controlled, and the GMs would have less input on how a park was to be managed. This was a major struggle for some, both from the Cedar Fair and Paramount teams. Did we lose some good employees during the transition, yes. Did we struggle with the growth of the company, yes. Were there times that we wondered if the company would financially survive, yes. The first few years were rough - we had to learn whose business models worked best. Paramount KNEW season passes and how to succeed with the right strategy. Cedar Fair KNEW operations and how to succeed with capital planning. A few years into the acquisition, both attendance and revenue grew to record levels. Dick Kinzel's decision to purchase the Paramount Parks was a success. After today there will be no Cedar Fair, as per the merger agreement, the company will be referred to as Six Flags. For those who spent the majority of their careers within Cedar Fair, this is a tough pill to swallow. We took pride in our parks and never wanted to be compared to Six Flags in how we operated the parks. Cleanliness, Safety, Courtesy, and Integrity were the four cornerstones for years and we took those to heart, and always felt we did it better than anyone, especially Six Flags. As I have many friends left within the organization, I wish them nothing but the best moving forward. I worry that the company that I gave 40 years to will never be the same after tomorrow, but hope that just like the Paramount acquisition, in a few years they will thrive.

Sharing! I found this Santa candy dish in the dollar store. Being cheap, I started not to buy him. But then, thought I better buy him now. So I bought one for Kornr Store and one for my home. In the past few years, I’ve noticed more Black Santa inspired decorations and wrapping paper sold in stores and that’s a good thing. That wasn’t the case a few years ago. Images like this Black Santa are important because we tend to believe what we see and what we are told rather than what we know for ourselves. Diversity, inclusion, equity, community are popular words we now use not really knowing and/or understanding the everyday personal costs, challenges and pain that lays beneath now culturally acceptable terms. But, you don’t know really know the inequality of an experience until it happens to you. In my opinion, Christmas time demonstrates the most powerful images of how life is imagined for the majority of the population while ignoring the rest of the humans. This holiday season, I challenge you to pay more attention to the human images presented to you while you shop and celebrate with friends and family. Images send powerful messages without saying a word. This same behavior happens continually in commercial real estate and supportive industries, like urban planning and architecture (I love y’all, but.). People get excited about new real estate development projects in and near downtowns and their adjacent business districts. And, we love the beautiful, glossy conceptual drawings and marketing. But, often I don’t see people that look like me. And that my friends is dangerous, because it subtly conveys a strong message to me and everyone else that Black and Brown people don’t belong there (that place, those level of supportive amenities and businesses) without saying a word. Inclusion, diversity and equity are just words. Santa is just a plastic candy dish. But there is this unspoken reality that happens when I walk into some places that aren’t use to seeing people like me. Something to think about, before you plan that next new shiny real estate development project. Consider the images (people and pictures), your team and professional circles present. And, now that you have this new perspective, know that your efforts will help dilute powerful, outdated mindsets and practices. Glad I got my Santa candy dishes.
