Many people say they are patriotic, yet I’ve noticed that veteran-owned businesses, specifically VOSBs (Veteran-Owned Small Businesses) and SDVOSBs (Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses), are often only invited into project teams when it’s “required.” The reality is that honoring our veterans should not be a box to check—it should be a reflection of our core values and commitment to those who served, sacrificed, and, in some cases, returned home with combat injuries. . SDVOSB set-asides were created to recognize the sacrifices of military service members from all branches who risked their lives in times of war. And, more broadly, diversity set-asides honor a complex American history, giving space to disadvantaged and underrepresented groups who have faced systemic barriers. A truly inclusive society acknowledges these experiences and strives to uplift those affected—not only when mandated but because it’s the right thing to do. . I hope my colleagues will listen to their better angels, embracing these values in every project and partnership. Patriotism isn’t just about symbols and words; it’s about acting in support of those who have served and ensuring that the principles of equity and recognition are woven into our actions daily. . Happy Veterans Day weekend to all the brave men and women that have sacrificed to serve and protect these great United States. And despite the political rhetoric, no one side is more patriotic that the other. We are all eternally grateful for your service. We thank and honor the soldier, not the politician, for our freedoms. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the freedom to vote. We acknowledge that it is the soldier, not the politician, that gave us our civil rights, liberties and the individual pursuit of happiness. We honor the the soldiers that anonymously sacrificed to protect those inalienable rights. We understand that it is the self-serving politicians, and not the soldier that have stifled our freedoms and beliefs in choosing for ourselves. And we know… that it is only the soldier that may lay claim to making and keeping America great, again and again. That simply can’t be achieved from the cheap seats or be used as a sound byte. No one said it better than Theodore Roosevelt, in his great speech about the men and women in the Arena. The Arena “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
