?? Sizzling Hot Topics: Chief Medical Officer Addresses Racism Directed at Chinese-Canadians #coronavirus ?????? ?????? A barrage of racist tweets and social media posts... Hateful comments... This isn't just taking place in Canada but I live in Canada and it is truly disappointing to read these headlines in 2020: ??? Chinese-Canadians facing hate, racism for coronavirus outbreak — much like the SARS outbreak in 2003 (National Post) ??? Canada's top doctor calls out 'racism and stigmatizing comments' over coronavirus (CTV News) ??? Chinese Canadians, health officials taking stand against 'unfair stigmatization' during coronavirus outbreak (CBC) We should be well past this. Executives need to have a zero-tolerance policy if employees are posting hateful comments. ?? What specific steps should Canadian schools and corporations take to prevent and deal with this behaviour? #humanresources #canada #executiveoasis Update: Peter Akman, a reporter at Canada’s CTV fired for racist tweet.
Nicole Liu? You asked about conscious vs unconscious bias.? Let me share a number of instances. I used to do a lot of diversity training. In fact, that was the first training I offered.? When I have facilitated diversity training sessions in Canada, I am usually faced with massive denial.?? I have had participants has approached me at break and ask to speak with me privately. They have shared the fact that, while one can't tell by looking at them, a parent or grandparent is Black. They said co-workers used to make all kinds of racist comments about Black people around them. They could take it anymore so they finally revealed their heritage and it was shock and awe.? I shared a video with Paula Madison? from her talk at Google.? https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/executive-oasis-international_paula-madison-finding-samuel-lowe-talks-activity-6497923928818802688-EJZR Like me, her heritage is Jamaican. She is mixed of African and Chinese heritage. Her grandfather is Chinese. Same thing has happened to her. Co-workers have made disparaging remarks about Chinese people and she has had to confront them and finally reveal her heritage. That stopped them dead in their tracks.? So, I don't buy the excuse that this is unconscious.
Anne Thornley-Brown it is unacceptable
????
This is so sad and disappointing. I think that most of these sentiments stem from ignorance and lack of information. This should be the time that all of us band together against the virus, not each other!
Anne Thornley-Brown indeed..
This is a story I'm definitely following?
Education and connection.
This reminds me of the time my Mother moved to a Canada/US border town just before 9/11. After the attacks she faced a lot of racism because of this very notion that confuses people and ideologies.? When I studied Criminology at UofT, it's no different than the many articles that point to communities that have a high rate of "carding of African-Canadians because of the notion of this community being more likely to commit crime. We as a people simply react to fear and lack of understanding with survival instincts, which in turn do not lend itself to true awareness and critical thinking of a situation.?
C-Suite and educators need to first create environments to discuss this and to remove any assumptions. Ignorance is not an excuse. Address the issues and this is something that shouldn't occur simply once a year. This should be a frequent discussion.?
There’s always a bull market somewhere in the world
5 年Once hurtful words are said they can’t be taken back. I’d imagine though, that education and interaction would help prevent this in the future.
