But there’s hope: a groundbreaking project is turning these challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth. Hosting Hon. Kanali Evans Alfred Mtambi at the 9th Agroforestry Symposium It was a privilege to host Hon. Kanali Evans Alfred Mtambi, Regional Commissioner of Mara, at our demonstration plots in Musoma during the 9th Agroforestry Symposium, organized by Vi Agroforestry. The event highlighted sustainable agricultural practices and the vital role of indigenous seeds in promoting food security and climate resilience. We showcased the remarkable performance of local seed varieties, including: Maize: Mehhe, Ibandawe, and Irriqutoo. Sesame: Unyenyemwa, ideal for short rains. Sorghum and Groundnuts, which thrive under local conditions. Additionally, we demonstrated sustainable farming techniques, such as: Organic Fertilizer (BOKASHI): Enhancing soil health and productivity. Push-and-Pull Technology: An innovative pest management system improving crop resilience. Hon. Mtambi commended TABIO and Vi Agroforestry for empowering farmers with knowledge and tools to adopt eco-friendly practices, reduce dependency on synthetic inputs, and preserve biodiversity. How can we support smallholder #livelihoods while sustaining a #deforestationfree supply chain? Musim Mas is the local implementer of a 10-year project in North Sumatra, focused on empowering 2,500 independent smallholder farmers, regenerating 8,000 hectares of degraded land, and restoring 3,500 hectares of local biodiversity. In collaboration with SNV and ICRAF (International Centre for Research in Agroforestry), we’ve provided extensive training in Best Management Practices, #RegenerativeAgriculture, Agroforestry, Institutional and Business Development, and Financial Literacy. Dedicated brands and Livelihoods Venture (L3F) teams have worked closely with farmers, offering individual coaching and fostering peer exchange. 3 years into the project, L3F has seen a remarkable increase in the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices - rising from 20% to 50-90%. These new oilseed crops are very special. ??They boost the diversification of cropping systems. ??Mainly by effective crop combination. ??Also, farmers’ revenue is affected in a positive way. ??As well as the overall sustainability of farming systems. Thanks to CARINA PROJECT we are innovating agriculture! At the General Assembly on 11.-13. June 2024, 17 partners met in Thessaloniki (Greece) especially to: ?? Listen to partner businesses and their needs. ??Evaluate main achievements, such as e.g. the establishment of CARINA lighthouses in France, Serbia, Tunisia and Spain. These “innovation containers” developed by farmers and advisors help gather success stories obtained from demonstration fields testing innovative cropping systems. ??Join a field visit experimenting with Carina and Camelina crops in different conditions and variety. A big thanks to all partners for invaluable insights into the practical aspects of our project!
