??Aunty Munya teaches that there are six seasons in the Bardi Calendar. ??They are defined based on several factors, including what fruits are ripe, which fish are fat, when turtles are mating, and the direction of the prevailing winds and strength of the tides. ??The seasons do not have absolutely defined dates and can be longer or shorter depending on the year; the seasons themselves are unequal lengths and range from several weeks to several months. In the Bardi calendar we are now in Barrgan. Barrgan is the cold season, which lasts from May to August. Traditionally, this was the dugong (odorr) hunting season, and it’s a good time for bushfood like Pandanus nuts (gaamba) and joongoon fruit. Joongoon (Mimusops elengi) is a medium-sized evergreen tree found in closed vine thickets behind coastal dunes on the Dampier Peninsula. The edible fruit is bright red-orange when ripe and either eaten raw or warmed in hot ashes. The wood is extremely hard, strong and tough and very riche red in colour. ????♀?What are you noticing about this time of year? #AskAunty #CulturalAwarenessTraining #IndigenousKnowledge

Our long-awaitied visitor, one of the most important target species of conservation concern, the Critically Endangered (CR) Yellow-breasted Bunting (YBB) was discovered in our paddy field! Due to habitat loss and hunting, YBB's global population significantly declined by 80% or more in past two decades. This is what a heartening moment for our nature conservation management project in Shui Hau to see a few YBB using our paddy field! This finding recognised and affirmed our habitat management effort and the importance of paddy field rehabilitation as a Nature-based Solution for wildlife conservation. https://lnkd.in/guqGscHC #hkbws #TheHongKongBirdWatchingSociety #BetweenMountainAndSea #NatureConservationManagementForShuiHau #ShuiHau #Lantau #YellowbreastedBunting #NaturebasedSolution #WildlifeConservation #CriticallyEndangered #IUCN #RedList

You don't have to "like" your job to do it. Why? A job is a means for survival like hunting and gathering. It's OK to not want to move up the ladder. it's OK to just clock in and clock out knowing you did you best. However, this means following company standards or the standards for the field. If you don't like how the co.pany is run you either adapt to what they want or go somewhere you do agree. like hunting gathering. if the animals or gathering materials in your area can be taken home by you your family will be in trouble. that means you adapt by learning from so.eone who can do it, move to an area your current skills will work, or just fade away

A prominent cultural practice of the Irula tribe from the Nilgiris is the Doddu Aatam festival which holds profound significance rooted in their beliefs and traditions. Born from the belief that gaurs were initially domestic cattle that adapted to the wild and evolved into gaurs, this festival symbolises a connection between people and nature. Irula and Kurumba tribal communities, along with the residents of Kotagiri, perceive gaurs as a crossbreed between domestic and wild cattle. Doddu Aatam is a community performance wherein the Irulas mimic gaur (called Doddu, meaning big) movements. The performance is a ritual to ward off ill fate and misfortune from the village and protect domestic cattle from harm and predation. Historically, Doddu aatam was performed over a period of seven nights, but the duration was shortened to three nights due to time constraints. Post-performance, participants engage in an elaborate cleansing ceremonial process believed to rid the village of any existing misfortune. They burn their performance attire, discard the ashes in the river before bathing, and only return home after praying and eating in the temple. Doddu aatam showcases the community's history of embracing their connection with the forest and its wildlife, despite the changing times. #Gaursinthestreets #GaursInKotagiri #SharedSpaces #DodduAatam #Gaur #Sharedspaceswithgaurs #Irula #NatureCultureSeries #NatureCultureRelationships #WildlifeConservation #Wildlife #Kotagiri #Conservation?

The Maasai tribe inhabit northern, central and southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Cow blood and milk are the primary source of their diet. At a young age, maasai children drink cow blood mixed with milk three times a day before they are old enough to go hunting. They don't slaughter cows during blood collection, they rather nick the cow's jugular with a spear or arrow.Usually, the cow suffers no side effects when mud or hot ash is applied. Cow blood is also used as a remedy for illness when mixed with milk What did you think about this? share your thoughts with us in the comments section. #tribesandhistory #kenya #Tanzania #africanhistory #tribesandhistory
