Earlier today, we filed an administrative complaint against a Pennsylvania slaughterhouse with both the USDA and OSHA. The complaint stems from graphic undercover investigations video obtained by Animal Partisan and alleges violations of federal laws regarding humane handling, food safety, and workplace safety. The complaint alleges that the slaughterhouse violated the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act by failing to adhere to protocol allowed under the law's "ritual slaughter exemption." The complaint further alleged that the slaughterhouse violated sanitation practices by allowing trash and debris to accumulate on the killing floor. Finally, the complaint alleged that the slaughterhouse allowed children to roam freely near flailing animals, sharp knives, and blood slicked floors on the killing floor in potential violation of federal workplace safety laws. The Forgotten Danes' Christmas Calendar ?? December 10th ?? "The tools at The Good Slaughterhouse are used creatively" ?? Behind today’s door is a glimpse at one of the tools the "good butcher" uses on smaller animals. An electrically charged device with teeth that must be clamped around the animal’s head. The teeth need to be pressed firmly into the skin. The butcher must ensure that the animal receives enough electricity to be rendered unconscious, as this is the action intended to prevent the animal from being awake and experiencing having its throat slit. What if this device is used simultaneously to drag the animals along? Is that effective, or is it truly cruel and thoughtless? ? The butcher pulls the animal by the head, and often the clamp loses its grip. This means that the animal hasn’t been properly stunned but now also has wounds and tears from the teeth of the electric device. The butcher then reapplies the device to the animal’s head and pulls again... until they both reach the slaughter floor, where he finally completes the act of slitting their throats, leaving them to bleed out. Many see the documentation from The Good Slaughterhouse and think it’s so horrible that it must be halal. But it’s not. This is the Good Danish Welfare Meat you find in the supermarket’s refrigerated section. Free-range, Organic, Local. The best of the best. ?? At least, that’s what they say. The Times report this morning revealed shocking practices at three RSPCA Assured slaughterhouses, following undercover footage captured by Animal Rising. ? Hidden cameras revealed sheep, pigs, and cows being incorrectly stunned and subjected to horrific handling practices. ? Workers were seen shouting and swearing at terrified animals, with one allegedly using an electric cattle prod illegally. ? At one facility, 96% of cows were goaded in violation of RSPCA guidelines. The #RSPCA has: ? Suspended the three facilities from its ethical labelling scheme. ? Reported the cases to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) for further action. While the RSPCA?argues their work raises welfare standards in the meat industry, this exposé proves no slaughter - RSPCA or otherwise - is humane. Improving welfare standards within these inherently flawed systems can only go so far. The actions taken by the RSPCA area step forward, showing that they are taking the issue seriously. However, the systemic nature of these findings cannot be ignored. All farms and slaughterhouses in this investigation were chosen randomly, and serious welfare breaches were found at every single one.
