As is known, the Law Amending the Law on the Protection of Animals (“Law”), which includes important regulations concerning stray animals, was adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye on 29 July 2024. It?will soon be published in the Official Gazette and enter into force. ? As Bi?er Güner, we?attach great importance to animal rights and the well-being of our stray animal friends living on the streets. Therefore, we would like to briefly express our concerns about the Law. ? Considering the lack of resources and shelters that municipalities are currently experiencing in terms of the obligations under the Law on the Protection of Animals, there is a possibility that the power granted to municipalities by the Law to perform euthanasia based on legal exceptions, other than medical reasons, may be directly exercised by municipalities without first implementing other measures due to the aforementioned inadequacies.?In the preamble of the Law, it is asserted that the Law on the Protection of Animals, which entered into force in 2004, is insufficient to ensure the safe and comfortable living and life safety of stray animals. However, we believe that stray animals can be kept under control through effective implementation of the law, adequate vaccination, sterilization and adoption practices. ? With the concern that some of the provisions of the Law may endanger the lives of our stray animal friends, we urge that the enforcement of the Law be postponed and that the provisions be redrafted after consulting with all stakeholders. #ProtectionofAnimals #Beavoice

Learnt so much from the findings about how to promote care for all animals. But I think the most common value among all my friends and family is kindness, the quality of being good to me and the choice of words. // Values that most correspond to pro-animal actions are: Health?(which can be used to promote plant-forward diets, advocate against the harms of factory farming and potential zoonotic outbreak from animal agriculture) Honesty?(which can be referenced in the fight against ag-gag laws and misleading “humane” labels, or can even prompt consumers to avoid meat companies that have lied about welfare) Reason?(which can be called upon with respect to how unreasonable many aspects of factory farming and animal use in experimentation actually are) Economic Fairness?(which can help level the playing field between animal and non-animal meat products in the marketplace) Freedom of Speech?(which is relevant to advocacy for ag-gag bans, fairer labeling, and the right to protest) Family and Community?(which can come into play when advocating against industrial animal agriculture) // When framing pro-animal issues to conservatives, consider appealing to specific conservative values, which may be different than your normal messaging.? For example, frame diet change as: - adding options, not subtracting them (to preserve the values of Conventionalism and Freedom) - discuss how the alternative protein industry is creating jobs (Economic Prosperity) - frame factory farming as harmful to humans (Health, Family and Community, Justice) or as unnatural (Purity) - point out illegal actions made by meat companies (Respect the Law) - foreign control of U.S. meat companies (Enemy States) - the lobbying from Big Meat (Dark Money) - the connection between crime and violence against animals (Stand Against Crime) - how animal agriculture harms the rural working class (Oppose Discrimination) - the morality of good stewardship of animals, especially companion animals (Faith)?????
New research from Faunalytics shows how conservative political values in the United States can align with initiatives to help animals at both the state and national levels. While animal advocacy can be apolitical, appealing to constituents and legislators on both sides of the political aisle is critical to passing legislation that will benefit animals. This impactful report helps identify which animal causes are most likely to gain support from conservative lawmakers or in conservative areas, and offers guidance on how to frame pro-animal messages to better influence cultural change and encourage individual pro-animal actions among conservatives. Key findings and recommendations, including details on how to apply these findings, can be found in the full report linked below: https://lnkd.in/gaU4AWhB

??? New Ruling Declares Canaries as Subjects of Law in Argentina! This important case involved canaries who were victims of animal cruelty under Law 14.346 (1946). The ruling, issued in Buenos Aires, follows previous landmark decisions that recognized other animals as legal subjects. ?? A Step Forward, But Room for Improvement Although the decision brings hope, the legal arguments remain weak. The ruling cites the Cambridge Declaration and the UN's Universal Declaration of Animal Rights as legal sources—questionable choices in judicial reasoning. None of this Declarations has legal "teeth" as they were not passed by governmental bodies. ??? Moreover, the court refers to the Five Freedoms of animal welfare to justify both condemnation and the recognition of legal subjectivity. While interesting scholarship exists on framing these freedoms as rights, this critical argument is absent from the decision. ?? Key Confusions In this and other rulings, significant misunderstandings exist about the "rehabilitation" of domesticated animals to freedom. Canaries, for example, cannot survive in the wild. Legal discussions about animal rights need to be more precise—rights must be tailored to each species' reality. ?? I'll share the ruling as soon as I have it. Meanwhile, you can read the news article in Spanish in the first comment.

???#MAPS: The state of bullfighting in Latin America Colombian lawmakers overwhelmingly passed a bill last week banning bullfights and other spectacles involving animal cruelty, a significant victory for animal rights advocates in a country where such controversial practices have been welcomed for generations. The sport is a big tradition in countries of Spanish descent, and five of the eight nations where classic bullfighting still takes place are in Latin America. The reform means that Colombia will soon leave a list that includes Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela,? alongside Spain, France, and Portugal in Europe, where public antagonism against the sport is also significant. Other countries in the region like Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica authorize bloodless variations of bullfighting. The animal cannot be killed or hurt in these versions of the sport, but it is still subjected to a lot of stress, leading to continued criticism from opponents. ??Read more in our Latin America Weekly Newsletter. Landmark Foundation is one of the few organisations challenging practices around biodiversity management such as gin traps, poisoning & culling - especially with Damage Causing Animals, which may include endangered animals. This new decision, from the Constitutional Court will have far reaching consequences for how environmental activists deal with environmental/ animal rights concerns online. Especially through social media. A key takeaway for me is the remark of the under-utilisation of the Section 24 Environmental Right & animal welfare from a biodiversity perspective: "[90]????????Activists’ “long history of guarding the interests of animals reflects constitutional values”[56]?which are those embodied in section?24 of the Constitution.?But it has been said that section?24 suffers from “ongoing silence” and “under-utilisation”[57]?in that, while it provides what some call the world’s most expansive and sophisticated rights-based approach to environmental protection, the right is often ignored.[58]" #landmarkfoundation #animallaw #environmentallaw Bool Smuts thank you. ?

Unfortunately, we've all seen stories like the recent news from Turkey, where stray dog populations are causing safety concerns, which in turn is leading to pressure to begin large-scale euthanasia efforts. Our hearts go out to communities facing public safety challenges with stray animal populations – as well as the animals who are suffering in overcrowded and low resource conditions. But we know that not only is euthanasia as a population control mechanism inhumane, there are questions about it's effectiveness. This is precisely why champion non-surgical sterilization methods for cats and dogs. These innovative approaches will be critical tools for humanely managing animal populations, and offer the best hope for a world where animals and people can live in a safe, healthy and happy balance together. https://lnkd.in/eTgSMwhQ

How can we rethink our food systems to benefit animals, people, and the planet? This question was at the heart of the Defund Meat Conference organised by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, which I had the privilege of attending last week. The experience enriched my understanding of the complex interplay between animal welfare, sustainability, and human health. As someone deeply committed to advancing animal rights, I found the conference's multidisciplinary approach particularly insightful. The discussions underscored the urgent need to: ?? Address the ethical and environmental challenges posed by meat production. ?? Rethink global food systems for sustainability and public health. ?? Advocate for legal and policy solutions that advance animal welfare. The insights I gained will be invaluable for my ongoing learning journey. I am incredibly grateful to have attended and to learn from experts and advocates shaping this vital field. I look forward to continuing these conversations and exploring ways to drive meaningful change! #AnimalRights #AnimalWelfare #Sustainability #DefundMeat ?? ?? ??

? Did you hear about the groundbreaking Bill for animal rights in Ecuador? ?The "Bill for the Promotion, Protection, and Defence of the Rights of Non-Human Animals" (Bill LOA) is in debate in the Ecuadorian National Assembly. ??If approved, it would be the first law in the world to legislatively recognize rights for all animals, potentially influencing animal rights beyond Ecuador! ?? WAJ applauds this initiative and the paper below written by key experts. ? Discover the critical analysis of the Bill LOA written by Marina Lostal, Ankita Shanker & Dr Darren Calley, recommending not to pass this Bill as it stands, due to its contradictions and focus on animal welfare rather than animal rights. ??
