3. Comprehensive Solutions We recognize that addressing gun violence requires a multifaceted approach that includes legislative action, community engagement, and cultural change. Our strategies will encompass: Legislative Measures: Advocate for common-sense gun laws, including universal background checks, restrictions on the sale of high-capacity magazines, and the implementation of red flag laws to prevent individuals who pose a risk to themselves or others from accessing firearms. Community Programs: Support and fund community-based violence prevention programs that address the root causes of gun violence, such as poverty, lack of education, and insufficient mental health services. Education and Awareness: Launch educational initiatives to promote responsible gun ownership, safe storage practices, and the importance of non-violence. Engage faith-based organizations, schools, and community groups in these efforts.

Article: https://lnkd.in/e6auEscG I recently wrote about the urgent issue of gun violence in Pennsylvania. In cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, gun homicides are alarmingly high. Violence intervention programs (VI), which employ trained violence interrupters with firsthand community experience, are crucial in mediating conflicts and preventing violence. The Promise Neighborhoods of Lehigh Valley program in Allentown, led by Dr. Hasshan Batts, exemplifies effective violence prevention and health equity efforts. Despite Violence Interrupter proven success, VI programs face funding challenges. While Congress recently allocated $50 million, the proposed $1.5 billion in the latest presidential budget is vital for addressing gun violence effectively. Increased support for VI programs is essential for creating safer communities. By prioritizing these initiatives, we can move beyond traditional law enforcement methods and make a real impact in reducing violence and fostering community trust.

New op-ed in Newsweek this week from the University of Chicago Crime Lab: America saw one of the largest declines in gun violence on record last year. Partly, that's because the surge of murders during the COVID-19 pandemic was so high that last year's drop returned us to a "normal" baseline, but in some cities, lives are being saved for another reason: a new idea. ? For the first time, the federal government has put real money behind community violence intervention (CVI) programs and is working to raise awareness of community violence. CVI is the most important idea that people either don't know about or don't understand. That needs to change. ?
