Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute welcomes the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (#FHWA) announcement of the $6 million Emergency Relief (#ER) funds to help the Vermont Agency of Transportation (#VTrans). Expanded Shale, Clay, and Slate (#ESCS) aggregates play a significant role in preventing flood damage in roads and bridges through several key mechanisms: 1. Enhanced Drainage: ESCS aggregates are highly permeable, allowing water to pass through easily. This permeability helps in managing stormwater by directing, filtering, and storing runoff away from structures.?By promoting efficient drainage, ESCS reduces the risk of water accumulation that can lead to flooding. <https://lnkd.in/dSSCpx25> 2. Reduced Settlement: ESCS is lightweight, weighing nearly half that of conventional fills. This reduced weight minimizes settlement under densely packed roadways and bridges, which is crucial in flood-prone areas.?By reducing the load on underlying structures, ESCS helps maintain the integrity of roads and bridges during heavy rainfall. <https://lnkd.in/gr7DUKii> 3. Soil Stabilization: The angular network of pores in ESCS aggregates enhances soil stability. This structural integrity prevents soil erosion and uneven settlement, which are common issues during floods.?By stabilizing the soil, ESCS helps maintain the foundation of roads and bridges, reducing the risk of damage. <https://lnkd.in/dSSCpx25> 4. Thermal Insulation: ESCS aggregates provide excellent thermal insulation, which can help in maintaining the temperature of the soil and surrounding environment.?This property is beneficial in preventing the freeze-thaw cycles that can exacerbate flood damage by causing cracks and weakening the structure of roads and bridges. <https://lnkd.in/gr7DUKii> 5. Support for Vegetation: ESCS aggregates support vegetation growth by providing deep aeration and high nutrient-holding capacity.?Healthy vegetation can further stabilize the soil and reduce surface runoff, contributing to better flood management. <https://lnkd.in/dSSCpx25> By integrating ESCS aggregates into the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, engineers can create more resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding the challenges posed by heavy rainfall and flooding. This approach not only enhances the durability of these structures but also contributes to sustainable and environmentally friendly construction practices. Today, FHWA announced $6 million in “quick release” Emergency Relief funds to help the Vermont Agency of Transportation with costs associated with repairs of the roads and bridges damaged by severe flooding from hurricanes Beryl and Debby this summer. “The Federal Highway Administration is proud to work closely with the Vermont Agency of Transportation to repair and restore communities by issuing Emergency Relief to expeditiously get federal funding in the hands of impacted communities,” said Acting Federal Highway Administrator Kristin White. Today was a major milestone for NJ TRANSIT as it broke ground on its County Yard/Delco Lead Storage and Facility. Centrally located in New Brunswick, the state-of-the-art facility will allow NJT to safely store and protect its rail fleets and locomotives from flooding during extreme weather. FTA Regional Administrator Michael Culotta joined the ceremony to commend NJT and highlight the $184.5 million support FTA provided through our emergency relief program to safeguard transit operations. bit.ly/4guqu7u

?? Build Resilient Infrastructure with ESCS Aggregates in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan! ?? Lightweight expanded shale, clay, and slate (ESCS) aggregates offer unparalleled benefits for infrastructure in flood-prone areas. With high permeability, ESCS promotes efficient stormwater drainage, reducing flood risks while supporting soil stabilization and minimizing erosion. Its lightweight nature reduces settlement in densely packed roads and bridges, preserving the integrity of structures even during heavy rainfall. By providing both thermal insulation and soil aeration, ESCS supports vegetation growth and protects against freeze-thaw cycles that can cause structural damage. ?? Stronger, Greener Roads and Bridges ?? ESCS aggregates not only improve the longevity of infrastructure but also contribute to eco-friendly construction practices. By stabilizing soil and supporting vegetation growth, ESCS enhances the natural environment and improves flood resilience. Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan can benefit from integrating ESCS into road and bridge projects to build a more sustainable, climate-resilient future. Together, we can reduce flood risks and protect our communities. #ESCS #SustainableConstruction #StormwaterManagement #SoilStabilization #ResilientInfrastructure #GreenInfrastructure #MidwestDevelopment #FloodPrevention

another great article from Doug!
This week I take a look at North Carolina with Angie?Bailey. The state already had its share of challenges… and then comes a hurricane! They’re in good hands though and I'm sure they’ll overcome all of their many challenges.? https://lnkd.in/gJ56rBGU

Did you know? From 2014 to 2023, 9 workers lost their lives, and 251 were injured in roadside work zones in BC. The Cone Zone campaign, supported by the BCCSA, is more than a seasonal reminder; it's a year-round commitment to preventing such tragedies. Each cone represents someone’s family member who deserves to return home safely. Join us in making BC roads safer for everyone. Together, we can make a significant difference.
