Supplier News: We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Across Nature with a new purchase agreement. Across Nature work with high-impact carbon removal and one of their featured projects is Nicaforest, a reforestation project that focuses on creating a sustainable value chain around reforestation while supporting local community development. Since Nicaforest’s establishment in 2010, they have planted more than 360,000 teak trees on degraded land, and removed over 98,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. They also provide educational workshops and job opportunities related to sustainable forest management. The New Principles for Responsible Participation in the Voluntary Carbon Market unveiled by the White House last week mark an important development for nature based solutions such as Corazon Verde del Chaco from Quadriz. It provides regulatory clarity and boosts buyer confidence whilst encouraging US companies to engage more effectively and transparently in offsetting strategies. Floating treatment wetlands..., what are they and why are they so important? As part of Severn Trent's Green Recovery Programme, the Team are building new water treatment works using greener technology, and have just finished installing, in what is believed to be a UK first, a nature based Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW). A FTW is a shaped platform, anchored into position that floats on the water where plants can grow. They help improve water quality by absorbing pollutants and removing specific particles such as ammonia and nitrates. The Wetlands at Witches Oak waters (31 across the three?lakes) in Derbyshire have been planted with several types of specific sedge, hard rush and flowering species which will help to naturally improve the quality of the water via their incredible substrate root system. As well as the environmental benefits from habitat improvement and ecosystem creation, the wetlands will contribute to overall biodiversity improvements across 46 hectares of existing space, too! Using nature-based solutions to help pre-treat natural water hasn't been tried before, so Severn Trent are leading the way and it could change how other water companies pre-treat water in a more carbon-friendly way, too. We have also supported the prevention of 162.64 tonnes of CO2e from being emitted through the funding of 26 verified carbon avoidance projects. This is equivalent to 125 Long Haul flights, or 403,510 miles driven in a car. We believe that this is crucial as these efforts significantly reduce our carbon footprint, promote biodiversity, and support ecosystems on a global scale, demonstrating our strong commitment to corporate social responsibility and environmental stewardship.
