Happy Independence Day ???????? Today, we celebrate the spirit of freedom and unity that defines the nation. Brazilian Independence Day is not just a moment in history but a symbol of the courage and determination that led to the country’s independence in 1822. Brazilian Independence Day is celebrated on September 7th each year. This day marks Brazil's declaration of independence from Portugal in 1822. The event that led to independence is famously known as the "Grito do Ipiranga" (Cry of Ipiranga), where Prince Dom Pedro I declared Brazil's independence along the banks of the Ipiranga River. The celebration typically includes parades, cultural events, and military displays throughout Brazil, particularly in the capital, Brasília. To recognize this national holiday, many Brazilians celebrate with parties, fireworks, and displays of national pride. As we remember the "Grito do Ipiranga," let us honor the legacy of those who fought for our sovereignty and continue to work towards a future where every Brazilian can thrive in peace and prosperity. ???? #DiaDaIndependência #SeteDeSetembro #IndependênciaDoBrasil #BrasilIndependente #VivaBrasil #GritoDoIpiranga

Greece's historical legacy, strategic location in the Mediterranean, extensive fleet ownership, robust maritime infrastructure, and supportive regulatory environment collectively contribute to its importance in the global maritime, shipping, and bunkering industry. Thus, Peninsula has been active in Athens since 2005. On March 25th, the Greeks celebrate their Independence Day. This day commemorates the start of the war of Independence in 1821 against the Ottoman Empire, which ultimately led to the establishment of modern Greece as an independent state. Haris Koulouris, a fellow colleague from our office in Athens, highlighted this is one of the most, if not the most, important national holidays in Greece, marked by various ceremonies, parades, and cultural events across the country. Greek Independence Day parades have military and civilian participation; and there are also flag-raising ceremonies, and special church services on the 25th March every year. Haris said many Greeks wear traditional costumes, especially children, and decorate streets with flags and banners. Additionally, cultural events such as concerts and exhibitions are common, along with family gatherings featuring traditional dishes. Haris described one that is delicious: bakaliaros and skordalia, which is salted cod accompanied with a garlic dipping sauce. The 25th March is an occasion for Greeks to come together every year to celebrate their history, culture, and national identity, as well as to honour the heroes who fought for their country's freedom. Haris is looking forward to spending this day with his family and watching the fireworks displays to end the day. #oneglobalteam?#energyflowing?#Greece #Mediterranean #fleet #maritime #regulatory #globalshipping #bunkering #Athens #bakaliaros #skordalia #Greek

June Officially Recognized as Portuguese Heritage Month on the National Day Calendar Mr. President Biden and PALCUS President Soares, My warm congratulations to PALCUS and its leadership on this wonderful milestone! 1.4 million Luso-Americans are indebted and applaud your efforts. Mr. President, on this the year we celebrate and commemorate other historic milestones: * 75 years of NATO's founding, of which Portugal was one ot he 12 original signatories; * 881 years of the founding the Lusitanian nation - the first or one of the first to recognize the 13 colonies as the United States of America; and * the Portuguese Diaspora worldwide commemorates our National Day - Portugal Day, Day of Cam?es, and of the Portuguese Communities - June 10, 2024 - there is no reason why the White House - or at least - the US Department of State - can't fly the Portuguese national flag next to the Stars and Stripes at the White House or at Foggy Bottom to honor the contributions of Portuguese and Luso-Americans to this Atlantic Alliance. What an exceptionally high recognition and honor this would be for us Luso-Americans. God Bless America and Viva Portugal! #TheWhiteHouse #USCongress #StateDepartment #Presidencia #PrimeMininsterMontenegro #SecBliken #FMGangel https://lnkd.in/de-A2MWT

Yesterday, 28th of October, we celebrated our second national holiday in Greece, the so-called "No Day". In 1940, on that day, in the middle of the night, the Italian ambassador to Greece visited the then Prime Minister and gave an ultimatum demanding the country's immediate surrender to Italy and its Axis allies. While the Greek Prime Minister didn't actually mention the word no, he rejected it and took the country to war against the mighty alliance that had already subjugated Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark, Norway and France. The audacity of the Greek people was such that the streets were flooded with volunteers, eager to join the fight at the front with Italian-annexed Albania. Indeed, for a few months, not only did the Greek army hold its positions in the mountains of Epirus, at the Greco-Italian border, but actually beat the Italians back and occupied major cities in south Albania. It was the first military defeat of the undefeated until then Axis powers, immortalised by Churchill's famous speech "until now, we said that Greeks fight like heroes, henceforth we will say that heroes fight like Greeks". One of the two most popular wartime songs not only called Mussolini a jackass and a loser but actually threatened Rome itself with occupation. So, Greece became the only country to celebrate its entry to WW2, even though we eventually lost. Because at times, while saying yes may be easy, saying no is the right thing to do. PS: LinkedIn doesn't like Wikipedia links, but there is a nice summary of this story under the title Greco-Italian war. #OchiDay #NoDay #WW2 #History

The Spanish were the first to explore the New World early as the 15th century with the Portuguese soon following. The first Africans from Spain were hispanicized Africans as soldiers, servants, settlers, and slaves. Africans were present both as voluntary expeditionaries and as involuntary colonists. Many people of African descent initially saw passage to the New World as a means of bettering their social and economic positions. Those who voluntarily set out on expeditions and became part of armed auxiliaries were more likely than those in unarmed roles to gain their freedom. The African pioneers who set out for the New World contributed greatly to the building and maintenance of colonial societies. Together with the Europeans, they formed a specialized and limited pool of human resources circulating throughout the Caribbean into the Americas. The exploration of these lands required people who would not only open up the land, but settle, develop, and secure the land as well. Many of these Africans remain unnamed but their legacy lives on. #blackancestry #blackhistorymonth #africa #carribean #afro #puertorico #puertorican #africanamericans #history #yoruba #igbo #spain #portugal

Unlike many other nations, Brazil's independence was not a grassroots movement led by the common people. Instead, it was a top-down affair orchestrated by the monarchy, primarily through the actions of Dom Pedro I, the Prince Regent of Portugal. This royal coup, while significant, was not a reflection of widespread popular sentiment for independence. The aristocracy, closely aligned with the monarchy, played a crucial role in the independence process. They benefited from the status quo and sought to maintain their privileges, which were threatened by Portugal's increasingly restrictive policies. The independence movement offered them an opportunity to secure their interests and establish a new political order that would favor their class. As Brazil transitioned from a monarchy to a republic, the celebration of Independence Day began to take on a more nationalistic character. The focus shifted from the monarchy to the nation itself, and the holiday became an opportunity to promote a sense of unity and patriotism. Today, Independence Day is a widely celebrated holiday in Brazil. It is marked by parades, fireworks, and patriotic displays throughout the country. Schools and universities often organize special events, including historical reenactments and cultural performances. #Brazil #Riodejaneiro #7desetembro #diadaindependência #ogritodoipiranga #LItranslators #translation
